Large Scale Central

looking for fellow modelers in my area

Hello Everyone,

I live in the jacksonville area and I’m looking for others that live in this area that model G scale

their doesn’t seem to be that many if any at all there is only one train related hobby shop and it is mostly O scale.

so if their are any around here please let me know.

Thank you,

Robert

I used to live in outside of Jacksonville. I still get down there from time to time as my daughter lives over in Milton. I agree there is not a lot of G Scale there - but there are a couple of shops that will help you.

Trains by Johnson is just off 29 north side. I visit there every time I’m down. He stocks n, HO and O but has ordered and shipped stuff to me in the past I couldn’t find up here. there is a small shop at the Milton Depot Museum. Mostly Ho and N - but there is a local club that has a G scale layout next door. they usually run on Saturday and Sunday. There is also Bobe’s Hobby shop on nine mile road about a block away east of 29. He has some stuff in the other scales, but has moved mostly to games.

hope this helps.

Welcome Robert from another Robert. I also live in the Sunshine State, although several hours west of you. You are correct, there is not a lot of hobby shops that supply G scale. In honesty, darn few. I am not familiar with Jacksonville, but the closest club with a regular meeting schedule I know of is in Tallahassee. There is the Florida Garden Railway Society, but their web site is quite stale, so I am not sure how active they are.

I am in Panama City area and travel two hours west to the Emerald Coast Garden Railway Club located in Milton, Fl. We meet and are affiliated with the West Florida Railroad Museum. The museum web site is www dot wfrm dot org, and the club site is wwww dot ecgrc dot com. These will give you some feel whether you wish to make a LONG day of it and come visit. We welcome visitors, bring what ya got and we can let it run for a bit.

Welcome to the hobby. Hope to see you there some Saturday.

Robert - I mixed up my sides of the state! I visit both - in-laws in Jacksonville and daughter in Milton.

Jacksonville only has the one shop anymore. When I was living there 10 years ago there was no active club. do you do any traveling in Florida or Georgia? There are a couple of shops in the Tampa Bay area that have G Scale. the one I visit most when traveling is H & R trains (which is up for sale I understand) They keep a website - http://hrtrains.com. In the Miami area the one I have visited that carried some G scale stuff was Discount Trains in Ft Lauderdale. Been a couple of years since I was there.

Hope this helps.

don’t feel bad - I’m moving to a town of only 2,000 people and nearest hobby shop is going to be quite a distance from me.

I am about 1.5 hours south west of Jacksonville in a little town called Pierson. There aren’t many hobby shops around, and G scale is scarce around these parts except for train shows.

I have been to the train show in Jacksonville, it’s coming up on Feb 14, which also happens to be Valentines day! (not good if you’re married)! I usually go to the Volusia fairgrounds train show in DeLand. There are all scales, but there are a handful of G-scale vendors. The shows are held usually once per quarter, 4 times a year.

Hello Robert,

I guess I am the closest G gauger to you. I am in Saint Johns next to the St. Johns River off of San Jose Blvd (SR13), about 4 miles south of Julington Creek (the Duval/St.Johns county line). Welcome.

Good luck to all you guys looking for other railroaders nearby. In the past, I, too, felt alone in this crazy hobby of ours.

I estimate that, wherever you are in the country, if you have half a dozen G scalers within an hour’s drive you are doing far better than average. The population of U.S. G scalers seems to be densest in New England.

It is worth joining a club if you can, even if you can only get to meetings very occasionally, also joining an association and going to shows. Your best bet is to be an active participating member. Each person you meet may readily introduce you to another!

I know a couple of large scalers who actually associate with nearby small-scale modelers, believe it or not.

It’s good to have anybody you can talk trains with! I can’t help but think that once the small-scale guys see our magnificent big trains, they’ll wish they were in large scale, and, who knows, some may actually join in our fun!

Once again, I wish the best of luck to you all!

John, yes, I have felt that way before.

Oh, um, like me being “sucked into” an HO club? Thanks Dave. And then being sucked into the local NMRA HO FreMo club.
