Looking for an unusual tool

I’m looking for a certain unusual tool, and not having much luck so far. I don’t even know what it’s called, so I haven’t been able to search for it online. My dad used to have one years ago. It has a row of metal pins that slide through a metal base. You can press the pins against a shape, and the pins slide to conform to the shape. You can then use this as a guide to cut material so that it fits this shape exactly.

Can anyone tell me what this thing is called, or better yet, where to get one?

I know what your talking about as I’ve seen them in Woodworking magazines. The closest thing that I could find now however was one of these…

A profile gauge? I couldn’t find one in metal…but found this one in plastic.

Ah…when all else fails, try Lee Valley… http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=32523&cat=1,42936,42958&ap=1 They have the metal version…

along with the plastic one…

Lowes carries them here…I think I’ve seen the metal ones. Look in the general area where their rulers and levels are hanging on the wall.

Profile gauge!! Yes, that’s it! Thanks guys!

Bruce…don’t forget that Ottawa is the HOME of “Lee Valley Tools”. Their head office is just ten minutes from my house.

If you are looking for a large square of pins try a place like Spencer Gifts in the mall
