Looking for a drive

I’m looking for a drive for a diesel project. Id like a 3-axle drive, with wheels about as big as the ones that came on the Indy, or the 45 tonner. Spacing between the first and third axles on the order of 6 1/2 inches.

Anyone know what might fit? Or better yet, have something in their parts box?

Crimeny, Bob.
That’s as big as a freakin LGB Mogul drive, or thereabouts!
Wutcha buildin?

Hmmmmm. Have you had a look at the LGB White Pass Alco? Apart from the USA Trains PA, they have the longest wheelbase I can find right now but are only 6.5" from outside the wheel to outside the wheel…

Seems ta me that the PA truck is going to be the one for you…

Working on an idea for a medium weight yard switcher, something around 30 ton or so.

Ahah! In that case, can I recommend the LGB six-wheel diesel whose number I sadly do not know. THAT'S got a pretty long wheelbase AFAIR.

Yea, Ive seen that…siderods and all, but at $225, its not exactly cheap…

You neglected to mention cheap in your original post

That's strange, over here in Yoorup we pay around $500 for that loco - here in UK it is £264 for instance.

Please send me ten of your cheap ones and we’ll divide the profits.

And you never mentioned the word ‘cheap’ - the very last thing I would associate with the owner of a prestigious site like this one.

Remember what Rabbi Reuven Hirschbaum [1894 - probably 1943] said - ‘When you are rich you can pretend to be poor, but when you are poor there is no way that you can pretend to be rich’. Or something like that.

USA sells there 3 axle drive seperatly, they used to have them at SanVal, but I dont know where you’d get them now, they were less than $100 each.

If you want steam, the LGB Mogul drive blocks are still around if you look, they can still be got for around a $100

Anyone have a PA they can measure the truck for me?

Looks like the Aristo ART-29355 would work. Hmmm

I would buy an Aristo 3 axle truck. They list for just under $100. I bought 2 at the BTS for $30 each. I dont thing they are 6" long but you could disassemble it and build your own chassis to hole the drives at your desired wheel spacing as long as it is longer than the existing spacing.

Nicholas Smith has em new for $65. Hrm…

Ok, I’ve decided the aristo 3 axle motor block’ll work. PN ART-29355.

Anyone have one in their scrap box?

I have a couple housings and motors, but you are on your own for wheels and gear boxes !

A little bit here, a little bit there, pretty soon you have a motor block. Paraphrased from Senator Everett Dirkson.
