Longest Day of the Year!

Actually, its still only 24 hours, BUT daylight is at its maximum. Should actually be the end of the Summer Solstice movement of the earth, so that the exposure to the Sun is the greatest, and after 6 pm local time it will start the beginning of the shorter days. In Bloomington, Illinois the Sun will be out for 15 hours and 5 minutes. That is discounting the predawn light and the dusk after sunset before dark.

.

Do a Google search of “Summer Solstice”, if interested in learning more.

Forecast is rain in the area, so we may see none of it.

When I hear the words Summer Solstice it is amazing how it used to be so important but today for most it is just another day.

My wife and I have been to Stonehenge and Newgrange and the amount of labor it took to build these 2 monuments that mark the solstice is staggering and awe inspiring.

Today is the Summer solstice and it sounds like a good excuse to run an excursion train!

I hate today. All today did for me this year is remind me I haven’t taken my kids out to play golf after work even though there is enough sunlight left. Now it’s all downhill darker and darker until Christmas.

And I don’t have to work tonight!

Geez you can tell Ric is an old sailor. Good thing nobody mentioned pollywog, shellback or something like azimuth or bearing, we could be here all day. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Which would be a long time since as pointed out it is the solstice.

See, I always thought ““The Longest day”” was a movie starring John Wayne and a slew of other actors… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Last night was our shortest day of the year. The day went to quick

That’s just 'cause you silly Aussies insist on having your cold weather in the summer time

I like that movie.

Yea, I am a bit saddened that this is the longest day of the year, and I have only played trains a few times so far this year. Last night we had thunderstorms and local flooding, but it appears that my railroad survived without any major damage. Now I can only hope that the forecast rain doesn’t show up tonight.

There was a guy at the Botanic who would moan all summer long, “the days are just getting shorter and shorter.”

Then one year, somebody said, “Oh, knock it off.”

Never heard him complain about that again.

Just another day. Tells me I have limited days left to camp. Later RJD

Yes R.J., You do have limited days left to camp, but you also have limited days left to breath, as we all do. Best make the most of it, which I know you do. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I’m a few days late for a timely response. The Summer Solstice is also our wedding anniversary. Gives a whole new meaning to longest day of the year (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)Took time out from prepping for guests next week to spend a beautiful evening with my bride. I heard somewhere that where we are it was about 17 hours of daylight. When it’s not raining I try and spend as much evening time outdoors as I can.

It rained 8 inches the morning of my wedding. Even the heavens were crying and I didn’t notice.

Oh my…you made me remember. The very instant I kissed my bride at the altar after the marriage vows a clap of thunder almost shook the church and the rain broke from the clouds. True story. I guess I should taken note right then and there!
