I started playing around with an actual logging operation. I still have to build a few shacks for the camp, a steam donkey and the likes. I have some figures and got some stumps in the ground. The log cars were filled today with the first of the trees to be cut. I will keep this post and uptdate as the crew makes more progress.
Nice start, Shawn…
Absolutely charming…
Why are these not in your “summer thread” pics?
I think the guy doing the cutting looks like Ken Burnt!
Your foilage looks great!
Very cool!!
Nice scene.
I think the two gentleman watching the third fella do all the work…used to work with the highway dept

Are you scratch building your donkey engines? I (eventually) need three of them for my coming railroad.
I also found a guy who makes harnesses for to-scale draft horses which I will incorparate if anyone is interested in a link for him.
Looks great Shawn. I love the stumps
Don Pearson said:As of now I plan on scratch building them. I have seen some great ways to build them. They seem fairly simple to build especially for my low budget backwoods RR LOL. Although Bachmann will be coming out with one as well. Looks pretty good not sure what the price is but if it is right I may go that route but then yet it is more fun making things and it has more meaning.

I love the look. But instead of just a steam donkey, build a portable sawmill!
That scene looks great. I especially like the plaid shirt!

Your the best Bruce. I love it, im excited now LOL This was something I have been looking for. I wanted to build a simple portable sawmill. Something like this will work great on my layout. All I need to do is build the steam donkey, portable bunks- (Im thinking about getting a few small boxcars and converting them into bunk cars etc…)and the sawmill. Do you by any chance have a shot of inside the sawmill. That way I have an idea on the setup.
Nice pics, Shawn!
Shawn: You can do this yourself, assume the rails are 4 feet and scale of the picture. I would say 16 feet wide and 6 or 8 foot between the columns, remember this was a temp building so keep it very simple. I beleive that is a “Head Saw” type of mill. I have not seen a kit of one of this type but you can look around, Start with Garden RR and go to Timber times and SHNGG. THere is an outfit, Western Scale Models who have a web site and have a carrage model and a ‘Band Saw’ model as well. I don’t have a site in mind but I would like to build a small saw mill. I would keep it simple but would partly enclose it, Western Washington you know. Ozark has a nice Vertical Boiler power unit, as well as a single ‘spool’ hoist unit. i have not seen a two spool unit, but I am sure there is one out ther some where! Good luck with your efforts.

Shawn, I’ve only got about 50+ shots of that mill. (Courtesy of Ric Golding, Gaetan Charette, Doug Matheson and me.)

I kept wanting to build one, but haven’t found the right spot on my layout, yet.
Thats perfect Bruce: Thanks now I cant wait to get started on this.

Paul - thanks. I like the idea of enclosing it partial. I saw an ON30 modle with a sawmill like this and in back was a small enclosed 3 sided building. Im going to use the same design Bruce gave me but enclose it partialy (back) since our winter can get nasty. Here is a link from that ON30 Micro with the sawmill.
http://www.freerails.com/view_topic.php?id=903&forum_id=40 My Micro ON30 is going to be something like this layout as well.
Shawn, Woodland Scenics makes a rural sawmill kit. It’s in HO, but you could get it for dimensions, if needed.

Let me know if you want more pictures.

Bruce, I have just the perfect spot. Build it and I will put it in the place of honor. Then, when you find your spot, we’ll go two falls out of three.
An amazing bunch of pictures there, and the ‘portable engine’ is remarkable. this would go well with some draft horses and the like.
