This came up a few times. What to use for log bunks. I think Jon had asked while making his log cars. I also ran into the same problem while making mine. Instead I made wood posts. Ozarks makes them but at $12 and change that can get expensive. The other the day I decided to take the posts off my log cars and go back to the log bunks. The problem was how do I make the log bunks? I have been spending the last few days looking all over for something that might work. I came into work this cold rainy morning and sitting on my desk was the answear. A few years back I had caught a guy setting illegal snares in the park (it was suppose to be for beaver but they were set to catch mink (out of season) I took the snares and kept them on my desk. While looking at the snare I saw a piece that is used for the locking device. It had two holes on either end (one end hole can be used to mount on the log car) and was bent pretty close to what i needed. Thne there is also a slit cut down the center of the lock. The chain can run through that. After researching on the internet I found them. Here is what they look like. Also the cable used for the snares is perfect for cable on a high line and spar tree. I ordered both and will report on how they look and work. I think it should work out nice. There are a lot of parts on a snare that might be good for modeling. The ends on the cable can be used to make axe heads, hammer heads ect… Check them out.

I just cut little triangles from wood and glued them on. Some cars have them and some don’t.

You can see them on the bottom car. Underneath that I bent a loop of wire to hook the chain too.
Shawn,
Anxious to see what you come up with. Looks like they have real possibilities.
Ken,
They are called cheese blocks. I guess for obvious reasons ;)=;)
Rick
That makes sense…whooda thunk it?..
I never finished my log cars, but I did figure out what to do for bunks. Bent from brass stock they will be drilled for some NBW castings and painted black…

Jon,
Did you make a fixture to bend those? If you did I would be interested in seeing it. It appears that they are VERY close to being identical.

Nope. Bent them around a small set of flat nose pliers. The space inside the triangle is the with of the pliers jaw.

Well, there’s your jig.
Thanks Jon.
