I picked up these beauties from a dealer in Georgia, very cheap compared with original MSRP.
Absolutely pristine and never been run. They will be used behind my B1, which should turn up this summer:

Gorgeous woodwork there Pete, holy cow… And what a great engine to pull them with.
Are you tempted to hump them to England and run on a British layout or two? I’d be! But the suitcase would be enormous…
It’s interesting how long these types of coaches were around.
I remember riding in similar carriages into London in the 90s and having to open the window to lean outside the door to grab the handle to open the door because of the design of slam-door carriages did not have interior handles.
Apparently it took years to phase out before Brit Rail got around to getting central locking systems in all their carriages around 2005 or so.
And unfortunately, there are several ‘restored’ rakes of BR Mk1 coaches around, such as the ones used on the West Highland Line “Jacobite”, which runs all summer with steam traction.
The owners have been in a dispute with the Authorities over the requirement to retrofit central locking.
