Live steam shay issue #1

I recently purchased a used live steam three cylinder shay. After testing, I 've found two issues. I was hoping someone could advise me.

First issue: The water check valve assembly to the boiler is clogged. The hand pump from the tender delivers water (I disconnected it from the assembly and it flowed well). Can the assembly be removed and cleaned? If so, any suggestions on how to clean? Also, the grommet appears to have a slow leak. Where can I find a replacement? Finally, do you recommend using a thread sealant? If so, what brand and type?

Here is the assembly:

Thanks for your help.

Joe

Joe,

I have replacement gaskets available, if you use gaskets no need for sealant. I do use the liquid pipe sealant on almost everything its made by permatex

First remove the pipe nut, that will release the pipe from the check valve.

Next unthread the valve from the boiler using the hex that is closest to the boiler.

Then using two wrenches, unscrew the valve. Inside you will have a brass pin with and Oring and a spring. Check to see that there is no obstructions.

If it sat for a long time the Oring can be stuck to the face.

Thanks Jason. I’ll tear it down and take a look this week.

Disassembled the check valve and cleaned it up. It’s working fine now.
