Live steam by Märklin

Greetings,
Does anyone on this forum have any experience with modern live steam made by Märklin?
Märklin has a 1 scale live steam engine in its catalog, but it is unavailable in the USA. It’s a class S 3/6 from the K.Bay.Sts.B. (Royal Bavarian State Railroad). It is about 26" long and comes with remote speed control.
Any information would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jan

Sorry, I don’t know anything about Marklin’s live steam loco.

I’ve just noticed that you have recently joined us, so…Welcome Aboard! We may be an eccentric bunch, but there is some really great talent here and lots to share.

Thank you! It sure looks like there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this forum. I love 1 scale and I used to sell a fair amount of it until there was no LGB to get anymore. I personally have some European prototype LGB and Märklin (but my interest is Märklin 00/H0 from 1935 until early 1950's). The live steam Märklin locomotive is just gorgeous and live steam has always fascinated me.

Jan,

If memory serves TAC (not to be confused with TOC or TOG) has one of those beauties. He should be checking in any time now.

Oh yeah, welcome to LSC aka the “House of Renegades”, where we call it as we see it.

Jan You may need a flax jacket here at times. Any way welcome. Good stuff here. Later RJD

The flack jacket comes in handy for those who behave like stealth bombers.

.
But not if you fly in like a BUFF.

You’re right, B52s get subjected to guided missile reception. Flack won’t do!

You can always drop some clear plastic F units to confuse the missle. That would be a good use. Heck, they confuse me!

Hehehehe

Aren’t they pretty? All those pretty flashing “lights”.

Evenin', Jan - tac here, and yes, I have the green Bavarian S3/6 and a few cars to haul it by, with. [some of you may recognise the poetic overtones there, some may not - those that do can advise those that don't].

It does not have remote speed control, but it DOES have radio control direction and speed control. I changed mine out about an hour after receipt because of the non-stop ‘glitching’ caused by nearby metal fence-posts, and now run mine using the latest 2.4GHz futaba digital system - note that this digital frequency system MAY not be legal in the US for terrestrial models… The loco is a very powerful hauler, easily managing twelve heavy Maerklin ‘ozeanblau’ cars at a good lick, although only eight of them are mine.

It is also a very fine near-scale model in its own right, with beautiful if delicate details abounding, as well as some clever touches such as magnetic catches holding on the cab-roof and tender access. You would be very happy to place it on YOUR mantelpiece, no doubt about it.

The loco has a number of weak points, however - the principal one being that the steam oil lubricator is excessively sensitive as to its setting. It also does not suffer careless driving - as proved a month or so ago when being run by a newbie who did not appreciate the vital difference between a constant supply of volts and a constant supply of water. He froze the loco up by allowing it to run dry - only the fine German engineering standards saved my boiler although the loco was solid for about ten minutes…it also burnt bubbles into the smokebox… :frowning:

Being a very powerful runner it is also a real greyhound on the track, even with a heavy consist, and will race like a mad thing if not carefully controlled - those beautifully-formed driving wheels are just made for high-speed running - it IS an express loco after all.

I have a few short video clips that I can post you via e-mail, as I rely on my pal Warren to post such stuff for me on this site. If you want to see this baby in action, please call me via my pm.

It has also appeared on Youtube, courtsey of my pal here in UK, Neil Robinson - do a search for Bavarian Pacific. Another friend, Rod Blakeman, also has one, but you’ll have to be pretty snappy to catch as it zooms by at a scale 220mph on HIS Youtube clip.

I also have an Aster Br01 Pacific, and, like many posters here, a few US outline steamies too, including the very popular Accucraft Mich-Cal three cylinder Shay, as well as the South African 16mm/1:19 Accucraft Garratt - also on Youtube under ‘tac’s Garratt’…

Meanwhile, best wishes and welcome!!!

Totziens -

Jan,
I forgot to welcome you aboard, so…Welcome aboard.

I don’t have any live steam yet, but that will change, I expect. For the moment I use sparkies.

This is a friendly place where real debate takes place. Sometimes a thick skin is helpful, but you will find that even when we disagree about stuff, we usually all respect each other.

Again, welcome aboard.
