Large Scale Central

LIVE FROM ATLANTA!!!!! it's the 2018 NGRC

This is where you will find daily updates from next weeks National Garden Railroad Convention. Those of you in attendance feel free to add your pictures and comments as well.

I am on the road early tomorrow morning. Better run through the final check list:

  • Topaz stoned on catnip…she won’t miss me for two maybe three days after that she is Carlene’s problem.
  • HDAV loaded and fueled… should be able to make Amarillo for breakfast.
  • Clean underwear in case I am in an accident…not sure why this one is so important but it will make my mom happy.
  • Bail money… Bob Cope is holding that, since he is bringing the Mrs’s he has the best chance of not being present when Hollywood gets us all arrested.
  • BD listed as my emergency contact…he has so much experience at fixing our messes it just seemed like a waste not to put those skills to use.

Well then… it’s go time!

Jumping in here, on the way today from Maryland to GA, decided to visit the NC Transportation Museum, Spencer, NC which has been on my list

Great decision, fascinating place with huge roundhouse full of steamers a few diesels, lots of cars, displays and exhibits. Also the Huge shop building, massive, nice restoration with autos, planes, boats, firetrucks, tractors, etc on display. Some track action with streamliner running passenger cars, and a GP an end cab switching cars about. Worth a visit for sure

Oh and in the shop portion of the roundhouse is 611! Clearly being worked on, replacing stay bolts in the firebox. Guess there is more work to be done on that beauty,

Jerry

https://youtu.be/bDRbF80NKDU can’t help but think of this as I prep to go. Old memories for sure(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Amarillo, OKC and Fort Smith.

Did not see much train worthy today except for some tankers sitting on a siding east of Amarillo. Long ways from the interstate so I did not try to get pics but I did see this old homestead shortly after crossing into the Texas Badlands.

That will make a cool model this winter and I do need at least one farmhouse on the layout.

Texas ran an extensive homestead program from the early 1900s until WWII. My grandfather was one of the benefactors. This place looks pretty typical of the era: wood frame double hung windows, heavy timber construction, stucco exterior and corrugated roof. Although I bet the original was probably rolled composite or even plain tar-paper. This one was probably built in the 1920’s or the well-house is not the original since it has cinder block walls.

This is a little over 35 miles from Vega which would have been the closest rail-head. All of the materials would have had to be hauled from there or Amarillo. Ugly trip down, a long dirt road in those days, called Route 66.

Up early again tomorrow: Memphis, Birmingham and finally Atlanta.

Less than 12 hours till Boomer and Hollywood are caught on on hotel camera!

You guys do know that most of those security cameras are 1080 HD these days?
