Large Scale Central

Little River Rail Road in Doc Tom's back yard

Doug Arnold said:
Looking good Doc. I spent part of the day Sunday with Jonathan Bliese in Chino who was doing some repairs on my rc/battery stuff. It's great having him within driving distance. I wish I had his skill.

We have friends a who had a bear try to break into their house twice last week. Them bears are active this year.

You and me BOTH! He makes it look so easy.

No bears in Wrightwood as far as I know.

Not like in the past.

These friends having bear trouble live over in Forest Falls.

I finally finished my Motor Car #1 for the Little River Rail Road. I used G Scale Graphics simple critter control and powered it with 8 AA rechargeable Ever Ready batteries in a very simple battery case from Radio Shack.

The head lamp functions as the speed control knob.

The on/off switch and the forward/reverse switch are from G Scale Graphics and placed in a “motor housing” up in the cab made from a tapered conduit box from Lowe’s.

This was my first scratch built motive power in any scale ever. I was pleased that it actually ran and the electronics did not go up in a puff of smoke.

Thanks for looking. Doc Tom

Tom that looks good. I love the simple critter control. I have two in use and going to order a third for another project I have planned. Hows the layout coming? Always looking forward to seeing your progress.

Thanks Shawn. The Simple Critter Control is very nice and does not cost a lot. It is a good first step toward battery control of our locomotives and is ideal for someone trying to learn the electronics in battery control.

The LRRR layout is coming along slowly about 3-6 feet per month. The long curved trestle seen in the first picture of the motor car is about finished. More pictures to follow in the near future.

I hope you layout has dried out and I am glad you got your electricity restored. That was some storm!!!

                                                                         Tom

Tom,
Nice job on your scratch build. You now have something unique
Ralph

Well Doc like the others, you have done a great job on a unique build

That really looks good Tom.

Since I’m stuck in a chair for awhile maybe I can get busy on mine. The miners are complaining they need one!

Sorry to hear you are stuck in a chair for awhile. Hopefully you will be up and about soon.

The critter controlled motor cars are neat, simple, and relatively cheap projects to work on. Good luck on yours and looking forward to some pictures.

                                                        Doc Tom

I’m going to try a “bash” with mine. I got a Bachmann trolley body from Victor Smith and a track powered motor. Some razor saw work and poof, the miners should be happy!

Doug, That sounds great. These miners are already real happy.

Looking forward to some pictures of your new beast. Doc Tom

You make your miners happy!

Well its been 6 or 7 weeks since the news came out of the Little River watershed in the backwoods of the Smoky Mountains. Seems the construction crews have been putting in a lot of overtime to finish the large curved trestle coming out of Nelson’s hollow.

Colonel Townsend was quite impressed with the work and took out Motor Car #1 for inspection. When he saw a Shay with a Lumber train trundling below he had to have some pictures.

He had the Motor Car stop right over the logging train.

Boss Crumb alighted and had Bubba Jones crawl out to try and and get some “eagle shots” with the Brownie Camera.

The pictures were fairly dramatic but Bubba done forgot to put film in the ole Brownie before they headed off to the woods.

Good Stuff Tom. Glad to see the crews working hard at getting theline completed.

You’ve been busy, and it’s lookin good
Ralph

Another great update Doc, and that trestle ain’t bad either! Nice work

…no bridge ties, or guardrails…low standards…needs upgrading…!!!

And where’s the water barrels?

They're still full of Jack Daniels :D Ralph

That’s not what Jack said. He said they’ve been using them for kindling!
