Large Scale Central

Little Hartland 0-4-0

I picked up one of these from Hartland. If you join their online club they are selling $50.00

I have some bashing plans for it. However, it runs terribly! I heard that these things have been just stitting for a number of years. I took it apart and lubed it as it was bone dry. I took the contacts out, cleaned them and made sure they were working as epxected. It is running slightly better but not much. It jerks and sputters like crazy. I thought these little Hartlands were suppose to be real runners? Anybody have any suggestions? thanks

Timmy, The first thing I would do (after your work): remove the drive rods, then try again.

hmmm… that brings up a question…

Should the drive rod be in the same position on each side?

They should be offset by 90º, that’s what quartering refers to on steamers.

No quite sure exactly what that means. However, it is very possible that while I was lubing the gears that I changed the teeth position.

Timmy,

If the crank on one side is at 12:00 the opposite wheel on the same axle has to be at either 9:00 or at 3:00. And the second axle (or any additional ones) needs to exactly correspond to the first. If it doesn’t “things” will bind.

Is this what you mean?

Tim,
Remove the side rods, and visually look to see if the mounting post gizmos are in a direct line on one side.
If not, remove the cover plate, pull one axle out and align it with the other. The other side of the loco will align itself.
Don’t need no ratios, degrees, etc.

Yes! Make sure that the crank pins are exactly aligned, as per TOGs post.

Looks like that took care of the issue. I still could not get the wheels lined up “exactly” the same, but much closer than they were. The jerking and sputtering has stopped.

Thanks!

Timmy,
I’ve got a couple of the little UP 0-4-0T’s
and I’ve been quite happy with them.
Not sure when they were manufactured,
but with a little lubrication when they came
out of the box, they been good runners.
I replaced the loop on the front end of one
of them with a aristo coupler and connect them
togather with a coupler that I made,
to push my snow plow. Works well in practice,
maybe we’ll get some snow here in Texas
next winter to try it out in reality

Dave

Can anyone tell me what the driver diameter is on that lokie ?

Thanks in advance

Tim,

When you get the bash done, we’d all like to see some pics.

Will do Steve. Just finished building a custom cab for it. Will post some progress pics shortly

Ok… I decided to just paint over the tanks to cover up the UP as I heard it was next to impossible to get the lettering off the Hartland stuff.

I also ended up breaking off the cab as even though I had the thing torn apart considerably I could not get it off any other way.

The plan all along was to build a new taller cab and hopefully bring the little loco more into scale with my other locomotives. I built this cab from sratch (a reall butt puller). My first attempt at any scratch building with no plans.

I’m not through with the cab yet, but here it is just sitting on the loco to give an idea of what it will look like.

VERY nicely done. I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Tim,
And you thought you couldn’t do it!
The ice is broken, now there will be no stopping you!
Nicely done!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa…!!

Another madman is on the loose…it’s all Vic’s fault.

Almost finished. I only have the railing on the right side to drill a hole for in the cab and install. I will post more pictures tonight when I finish.

Sweet!

Nice work, Mongo Like! I have the other HLW version with the tall cab, but that looks better.

Warren, what did I do???
