Did I miss these the topic somewhere, haven’t heard anything about this but yet the 2014 Catalog has new engines, tank cars, boxcars… etc

Looks like they are making sets for kids and not the hobbyist because even in the pictures they look cheep and poorly made. I wish they would get back into the market with some quality stuff.

Does look cheap and toyish, looking at the plastic switches for the shed yard though

Yea, cheap battery powered stuff. I also hate that flip type online catalog. Its a pain to keep zooming in and out just to see that I don’t want what it was.

You sure some of that isn’t O stuff?

Much of it is “O”. But some is G-Gauge in the front of the 2014 catalog. Very toylike.

Thanks Gary I was looking at this on my phone so far. Need to have a read on the PC.

“Under the Tree” sets. There is a place for this in the world of Lionel, but I agree; we need to see more nice scale stuff.

Bring back the Atlantic!

I have one of the G sets, unfortunately its basically 1/32 scale-ish maybe even 1/35, its very small, and as such even the cars are way too small to mix with what I already have. So no cigar from me

:frowning:

You are kidding! New stuff from Lionel in 1:32 scale. I’m in!

Amateurish doesn’t bother me. That’s my middle name!

Any assessment of the 2-8-2 loco accompanying the Polar Express set?
1:32?
Durability ?

I read somewhere that its very toy-like, with plastic drivers. The one I did see looked like its drivers were all plastic. But I don’t have one, so I dunno what it can and cannot do.

It is a toy, unapologeticly so. I’ve had one since it was first introduced, run it at Christmas every year. I don’t ask it to pull anything more than its three very lightweight coaches.

Dick you might want to look at them first, check out this video of mine on the layout

If you look at it passing the 1/22 stuff you can see the size difference, like I said they are smallish even for 1/32 maybe 1/35.

If your still interested send me a PM I’ll sell you my set (for cheap) that way you can determine whether the newest offerings are worth further investment .

Lionel is so very expensive. However, if they manufactured some nice locomotives (both steam and diesel), I would entertain getting one. I know from my 0 gage experiences that, despite the cost, Lionel locomotives now exceed or surpass all my expectations of a highly detailed prime mover. Especially the Legacy units. Between awesome smoke generators and highly detailed bodies and lighting features, a large scale version of the GE Demonstrator, for example, would most decisively be on my list of must haves.

Stacy, Lionel did make an Atlantic, a small 6 coupled steam locomotive and a GP something in large scale. The Atlantic was rather chunky and the one I bought wouldn’t run at all. Its wheels weren’t true on the axles. The diesel they made was a bit small, I think it was 1:32nd. I haven’t heard much about it, so I guess not many were made.

Lionel also did some Thomas in large scale, and from what I have read about them, they were problematic.

It would be nice if Lionel would get back into large scale with some quality stuff, better then what they had. I have a few Lionel cars in large scale, and they aren’t particularly well detailed, and they aren’t top of the line quality wise. But since I gottem cheap, they are good for bashing and detailing.

I have the lionel atlantic, and it can be easily fixed up to be a nice loco…

Get a couple of tweaks on the drivetrain, add weight, and pickups to the tender.

Greg

Greg, yes it can be fixed. But I returned mine since it was so large in comparison to the other equipment I had at the time.

I was just telling Stacy that Lionel’s offerings in large scale weren’t the quality of (some) of their O gauge offerings. (I said gauge, not scale)

It would be nice if Lionel would make some 1/29 stuff with the same quality as their “0” scale Legacy engines. But then the prices would be in the very high end range. Love to have a 1/29 Northern similar to this Legacy Northern in “0” scale.
