Link n'Pin, brakemen, disconnects on a Hungarian Logger

This video was shot in Hungary in 2015 of a modern day logging outfit. Yet look at the equipment they are using and the labor intensive train crew. There are link and pin couplers, disconnect logging cars and individual guys on cars working hand brakes!! Unbelievably, you get a chance to see the equipment of the past put to work to move the logs in the 21rst century. I was amazed at the number of guys making up the crew of this little train and the relatively few “sticks” they moved for their efforts. Enjoy.

Very interesting Doc. One of my daughters-inlaw is from Hungary. I forwarded it to her. Her grandfather was a steam engine driver in the 1950s.

Fun way to kill some time. Thanks!

I wonder, since the logs are already on a truck, why they still use the RR. No good roads off the mountain?

They did travel quite a bit up and back. I Still do not know how they made any money with the paucity of logs and the large crew size. Government subsidy perhaps???

The Laev Rwy is the Hungarian State Forestry Service. Not government subsidy, but GOVERNMENT!

AH HAAAA. That explains it! It also explains some of the guys in a uniform of sorts with shoulder patches and the government heroes painted on the front and sides of locomotives.

Thank you so much for this information I was really perplexed. Now I know the “rest of the story.”

I LOVE the Hungarian Narrow gauge szén! Trains running down the sides of the streets in little villages, with front gate right onto the passenger car! How much fun is that?

BTW - LÁEV = Lillafüred State Forest-Railway (LÁEV)
