Large Scale Central

Likely Email Virus

I received an email yesterday from “[email protected]” claiming a data breach with Large Scale Central and My Large Scale. Has anyone else received this?? Its very official looking and claims to have invalidated passwords, etc. You are to click on one of the links listed there. So of course the first thing I’ve done is come to this site to find my login is just fine and no evidence that anyone else has this issue.

If you do get this email please be wary that both LSC and MLS are listed in blue which means a link that will most likely take to you somewhere you don’t want to go or even more scary open something in order to get information from you.

I don’t see any other post like this so it just might be an isolated incident…just be on the look out.

Below is link to a Dropbox that has the screen shot I took

Thanks,

Richard

There is a warning over on MLS at the top of the page. It has been there for over a month explaining that VerticalScope had been hacked. The administrators of the site are asking everyone there to change their password and change it often. They say the breach was widespread and could affect other sites you may have visited.

Some folks on MLS have received an email to explain the problem. I haven’t received one yet.

Normally if you hover your pointer over the link, the URL of the link will appear at the bottom left of the screen. I do that before I click any link, and if its not what it claims to be, I do not click it.

Ok Gary…thanks for that info. I’m sorry to say I’ve been spending most of my time on this site as opposed to MLS so have not seen that. But I’ll check it out.

Likewise for me Richard…I spend much more time HERE now also.

I got the notice via MLS and changed my password, I don’t use the same password on other sites but I also recently changed these as well. I also spend far more time here, MLS got me into large scale at the Rusty Boat Show but since Shad sold it it’s been a shadow of its former self. Most new posts are in live steam I’ve joked they could call it MyLiveSteam

LSC is in no way related to MLS. If you get an email tying the two of them together it’s more than likely a scam.

I am guessing they think we are a bunch of old guys with no computer savy and will follow anything they put . Little do they know we ARE a bunch of Old Guys, but we got to be old by not CONTINUING to do dumb things, fer instance at 6years old I peed on an electtric fence, 54years later I have yet to do that again.

Thank God! (I apologize for the religious reference) Thanks, Greg

Hey, watch who you are calling old! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)I am not yet a half century old, (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)but I am getting close. Yes, many folks get to be our age * by not continuing to do dumb things. But there are those who never learn, and that day their luck gives out, they are really going to be in trouble.

  • admitting that I am getting old, and thereby negating my first comment.

Yea, there is an old saying that goes sorta like this,

“Good judgement is based on experience and most experience is based on bad judgement”

Kinda the code I have lived by(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

There are more than enough scams to go around, it seems. I suspect there are enough believers out there ? Between the email scams and phone scams, it must be a lucrative business.

Dan, I am thinking the same thing.

Judging from the amount & type of spam in the email account that I used for that forum… It certainly appears that MLS was hacked.

Glad I used a junk/alternate email acct for that forum, for exactly that reason.

The company that owns MLS and MANY other sites had it’s databases hacked. Passwords and other information was obtained.

The email received was probably legit, but even things like that I do not open.

As an aside, months ago the MLS “management” warned that they would be forcing password changes, but it has never happend, clearly they don’t really care since there is no way to turn the clock back and make it like it didn’t happen.

Greg

Went to MLS last week for the first time in ages. Didn’t like all the pornographic advertisements that appear everywhere including as part of my signature.

Tom, lets hope that Bob won’t let that happen here. I think he would keep this a more family site then that.

At least with Google Ads, the ads they show are based on your Google searches, and pages with similar content.

So watch out you guys who buy lingerie for your lady friends . . . You’ll see the ads here!

I’ve been ROFL at the antics over on MLS about the password hacks. It’s a model railroad hobby - not my bank that got hacked. Let 'em steal all my pictures and posts!!
