Lightweight Transport Carrier -Thanks, Bruce!

I was/am faced with transporting my old-style EBT consist to the FL winter home. My existing boxes are 1x10 wood ends and 1/4" ply sides/bottoms, and they are too big at 24" long - most of my old-style cars are less than 18". So, thanks to Bruce’s design for carrying his cars in to storage, I decided to make some small, light, simple, stackable carriers.

The individual units hold 2 cars and consist of a 1.5" wide by 18" long wooden strip supporting the axles between a pair of 1/4" ply ends. Additional lengthwise bars keep the cars in place - some soft padding will be applied before they go in the car! I had some redwood strips left over from the days when I made my own track, so they were cut down to make the side and center pieces.

The finger holes in the ends were made with a Forstner bit (used to make round depressions in kitchen cabinet doors for the hinges.) Spare bits of ply were used to make the flange that stops the carrier above from moving around, and these fit between the axle supports of the carrier above (not visible in the photos.) A mini bungee cord keeps the stack together. Here’s the underside view:

Pretty neat, Pete. Padding is necessary, as I found out when I didn’t have any. I ended up sticking some self-adhesive insulation strips on the rubbing spots.

That looks great, thanks for sharing Pete.

Neat improvement to Bruces design. It allows for a lot more customization of the height of the stack.

Nice work Pete
