Lighting - Costco's battery lights

Efforts at night runs of our garden RR are just OK with repeat performances at Bar-B-Qs with “we’ve seen the trains” relatives - here’s a solution to making the experience more interesting – especially with relatives that have seen the RR during the daytime – and, well, yawn at repeated show 'n tell efforts. Besides, what could be more interesting if lighting could be controlled by the train WITHOUT your participation or a gimmick-loaded wiring project. “Whoaaaaa. Did you see that!”

Having discarded (try thrown away) my last Harbor Freight solar “recharageable” garden yard lights, I tried the Costco-sold battery powered LED yard lights - 2 per pack - for $20.00 per pack. Yes, they work. Yes, they take AA batteries and are activated by motion. Yes, they WON’T go on unless it is dark. Here’s the trick: Lights that go on when the evening train passes X point on the layout. Sure, it is a little hokey — but, for the non-hobbiest, this is a great. Think of the application IF the lighting unit was separated from the sending unit for another electrical 4.5 volt application??? Signals could be illuminated? Other powered items could happen. Possible? For me, just the effect of the train entering one of the canyons and being illuminated juiced up the guests interest. These lighting units can be placed where you want on the layout. Fully portable. Waterproof? I don’t think so. You would need to make a waterproof cover for the unit.

The units come with batteries. So far they stay on for 20 seconds then fade out. For sure, those light have kept out critters who patrol the yard at night! B-L-A-S-T and the light goes on and they leave.

Obviously, I now have them installed under the eves of the house and garage whereby we do travel at night – to the car, take out the trash, etc. They work great.

Some enterprising reader will come up with other applications once the unit is taken apart. I’m ready to read how they can be used!

Specifically:
Can the sensing mechanism be adapted to activating small motors or other lighting devices used in night operation? Is there a limitation on the voltage for the on/off sensor? Currently (shocking pun) the voltage is 4.5 with three 1.5V AA batteries installed in each unit.

Thanks,
