LGB's cleaning block pad? Another source?

Here’s an investigative question – esp. for HJ and his ability to translate.
Is there an alternative source for LGB’s track cleaning pad material?
Granted, on the “other” site I did make a similar posting. This redundancy will hopefully maximize chances for a response.

This is not a fake posting for a debate on tack cleaning methodology.
Please don’t derail it into this topic.

No matter what method you use to clean track, only LGB’s product and method may come to obscurity – or what’s left at future collector prices.

I did speak to a 3M product representative two years ago. He granted that he didn’t know of a like 3M product.
That was at the time I was peeved at paying $9 for a simple sandpaper holder and some sort of silca-based-rubberized cleaning pad.

Enough of the discourse - now, the two key questions:

KEY QUESTIONS:
– Does anyone know of LGB’s source for the rubberized cleaning pad? (and can we get to it?)
– Does anyone know of a similar product here in the USA?

OK, do we not all agree, it is sooooo temping to derail this topic. Please don’t.

Thanks.
Wendell

The pads and the blocks are in the pipeline, let me check how far along they are.

The original LGB pad and paper were sourced directly from 3M. I have an original parts package with 3M embossed on the holder. Sand paper blocks are a common hardware/automotive item and in some cases available for as little as .50 to a dollar. I prefer the 3M "wool pad" type material in a fine grade.

Wendell, go to Train-Li. They will have them in stock shortly. Look under the tab that says LGB replacement parts.

Warren, Those are the little pads for the device that mounts under a car. Track cleaning pads (equivalent to LGB® 67005) The track cleaning block is p/n 50040 and is in stock at RRS.

TOG

To Jack-
You likely have hit the magic button: Evidence that 3 M IS or WAS the supplier to LGB.
Now, is that specific rubberized pad available to the public in a larger format, say, the size of sandpaper?

To Warren-
Knowledge of a surrogate (best word choice?) supplier is helpful. The question I am personally invested in is the one that Jack (above post) focused on: The supplier to LGB. I imagine the cost of the abrasive product alone would be considerably less than LGB’s pricing, AND the product would come in a larger format.

Meanwhile, anyone else see a 3M product similar or the same as the LGB abrasive block?

Thanks,
Wendell

Wendell, Was as in past tense is the operative word. I don't believe that the recent pad that LGB offered was made by 3M. But, hand sandpaper pads are offered in many, many styles. All are hand size and most stores offer sheets of sandpaper sized for the pads. You want a material that basically polishes the brass without leaving scratches in the railhead. I hope I've understood your question correctly.

Jack

Jack and all:

What interests me is the LGB pad material. What is it and can it be purchased other than through LGB.
Jack’s discovery of 3M as the supplier – granted WAS the supplier – means the product did EXIST outside of LGB.

REQUEST:
Does anyone have ANY connection with the abrasive industry and show an LGB pad and see if there is a companion product?

As to what do I use on track:
1 - 150 - 200 grit dry wall “screen-type” sanding material attached to a drywall sander pole;
2 - 200 grit wet/dry sandpaper also can be attached per above;
3 - 3M black pads - cut to fit my Joe Black track cleaning car enter section (same format as the new Bridgemasters unit).
4 - The honest-to-goodness LGB cleaning pad, removed from the sanding block, and glued to a dry wall sander head.
5 - Any of the above at any unexplicable time.

PLUS: Rereading all of my e-mails from Dave Goodson, a proud member of the battery mafia, which “cleans” out my mind.

Selah,

Wendell

I just received a phone call from the gentleman saying they are going to provide LGB parts and repair. He worked with the lgb for 28 years. I have no association with this company other than glad to see someone will be offering products.

thank you for your interest in the Massoth product line. You can order the cleaning wheel pads directly from us, they will be available in about 2 weeks.

Ric,

Since Massoth was a large LGB OEM - soundboards, MTS, sound units and all kinds of other stuff (have a look at this section) - it will be interesting to see what all shows up in a different livery.

BTW Massoth setting up shop in the USA some time back was another interesting indicator. Yes, the world keeps on turning; at a refreshingly slower and steadier pace than the spin from certain corners.
