LGB whistle/bell track magnet

Does anyone have one of these that they don’t want a fortune for? I need one for a few loco installs i’m doing for others. I know i can use other magnets but they use the LGB style and I want the loco to work properly with those before I send them out.

Thanks

Terry;

Not what you are looking for, BUT thought I would post this here as well. The magnets described below are very small and can be mounted on top of a tie without disturbing wheel flanges. Others may find them usefull as a replacement to the LGB product.

Just a comment about magnets. If you are already using a Phillips Sonicare toothbrush, or know someone who does, those brush modules use one or more very strong miniature magnets on their base. When it is time for me to discard an old brush module, I “harvest” the magnets from it. The magnets are glued to the base of the brush module. They can usually be knocked free with a light hammer and a small chisel or cheap miniature screwdriver.

Presently I just use my magnets for whistles and bells, and I have a nice supply of them. When these magnets are secured to a tie with 3M blue poster putty, they almost disappear from view.

Hope this helps,

I have magnets purchased at Radio Shack and Home Depot – small ones. As to the LGB sound tender for the chunky 0-4-0 or 2-4-0, the magnet located on the track either activates the bell or a whistle per the magnet being closer to one rail or the other. The plastic encased magnets for rail ties, sold by LGB, are not special – both sounds are dependent only on the magnet’s location in the track, not the brand of magnet. Yes, the tender has a sensing device that discerns whether the magnet is activating the left or right side under the the tender, thus determining which sound is made.

As to magnets attached to the bottom of the locomotives, I have used both LGB “thin” magnets with the attaching clip and a off-the-shelf ones. No difference in performance. Nope. None. The LGB brand name is still, understandably, very powerful.

I know they are not special and how they work, but as I stated above the person I am doing the install for uses LGB track magnets and I want to be sure I have the height set right to activate the whistle and bell. I have rare earth magnets which sets them off fine but, if the LGB magnet is not a rare earth it will have less strength and the setting may or may not be different. Using the same magnet that the owner uses will insure that the loco works properly which is what i want for something that comes off my bench.
