LGB Steam Engine Mogul - Anolog Sound/Digital Sound

Is there any location where a Hobbyist can find a listing for which LGB Moguls have Anolog Sound and which ones have Digital Sound? This information would be helpful to many persons in the hobby to make sure of what Used LGB Mogul they are buying probably on EBay. Mainly with all the changes in technology of the sound systems, in paticular that LGB is out of business. Walthers was supposed to take over, not sure it’s happened yet, or if it ever will. So, questions still remain, who will be the USA supplier of LGB parts? This site and it’s members are a God send for information about Large Scale.

Thanks
Ed Engle

Can’t answer the question about Analog/Digital sound.

John,

Thank You. Will contact Walthers.

Ed,
I believe the timeline was around 1995/96 when the switch over to digital began. I always believed my two #23192 C&S Moguls were digital but found the model made in 1995 was an analogue model. I believe that it was the last of the analogue sound units. I would need to check but I am certain that my other #23192 is digital, as it is a later model. Digital sound went into the Denver South Park Forney circa- 1996. If bidding on an early Mogul, then I would be asking the seller for details of the OK sticker on the lower drive block cover. The first and last digits are the year of manufacture. If post- 1996, then most likely fitted with digital sound. If a 9 volt battery is required then most likely analogue sound installed in the tender.

Hi Tim,
Thanks very much for the information. It’s nice to know that LGB did have a method to tell whether a Mogul engine was analogue or digital, even though it was never published to my knowledge. In addition to what you described as being an analogue sound system, 9 volt battery in the tender, OK sticker on the bottom of the engine, checking the 1st & last digits to check the year of manufacture, 1995 probably an anolgue model, post 1996, most likely fitted with digital sound. I was checking LGB manual/paper work & found another way to check for digital, it was listed under “Sound” as digital. Luckily, I found this information in postings by other members of this site, with the web address they had posted. All this info is very helpful to purchase a used LGB Mogul on EBay. Ironically, there is a D&S #376 LGB Mogul on Walther’s web site, Walther’s #426-25196 for $914.98. Of course, this engine will be lower in cost at many of the Hobby Store selling G scale equipment. Makes EBay seem so appealing.
Thanks again.
