LGB Spare Parts?

Hi guys…I recently came into a few new locomotives (among other things) as part of a…well, let’s call it a pre-bequethal. They’re mostly in good shape, if not in need of a little TLC. The two steamers have a problem, they each have a broken leg (snapped side-rods).

The mogul’s side-rod was pretty easy to find, given their ubiquitous nature. I’ve been scouring Google trying to find replacement parts for the Forney, without much luck. Specifically it’s model number 25253. It was a reissued product after the acquisition of LGB, but it seems they’ve already discontinued it and as such no longer list it on their spare parts page.

Anybody have an idea where I could find these side rods? Or should I try an alternate solution to try and fix the one I have?

The side rod from any LGB Forney would most likely fit.
If you can’t find a replacement, one could easily be made.
It is just a flat piece of plastic with 2 holes in it.

Brian,
Have you tried train line?

Nico,

I am unfamiliar with Train Line. Is it a company/site, or product line/etc?

I saw Walthers has sold & will sell a new reissue of the Forneys & have an email out to them to see if they carry replacement parts for them, hopefully they will have good news for me or a direction in which to look.

It’s a shame 3D printing is not more readily available. This would be the perfect case for scanning a part into a 3D object & printing a replacement.

try Train-Li USA as well

they are the Go-To place for LGB parts

I made side rods from aluminium. Easy to do with a file & Hacksaw. Just make an opposite to the good one. From a hardware store I bought a length of 1/2"wide x 1/8" thick. 8 foot length was about $4 Au.

Remember the 10 foot rule but these will pass the 2 -3 foot rule.

Brian,

Like Vic said, Train-Li, which is part of Train line a German company with tons of parts.

If you strike out there, i have a couple other places you can try.

Thanks Nico & Vic, I have checked Train-Li (they’re supplying the part I need for the Mogul), and they appear to only have a limited selection of parts for the Forney. I hadn’t seen the note on the part list to email them if what I need isn’t listed, so I’ll be sending them a note shortly to see if they can help.

Upon closer inspection, it turns out it isn’t the side rod at all that I actually need to find. I had thought it to be snapped at the joint, but is in fact the joint itself that ties the side rod into the rear drive wheel (Specifically part 83 on the exploded diagram for the 20252).

The crank that is fitted to the end of the axle?
It is an outside frame loco.

Andrew

I work with Train-Li and the parts for LGB mostly come from modell-land.de

Go to that web site and see if they have your part. (I did not see the crank in the 8 parts available for the forney but may be used on some other engine).

This site is not in English but is very easy to navigate once you select the model such as Dampflok for steam in the left hand column, then you get taken to pictures and part numbers.

Parts are ordered/shipped every 6 to 8 weeks and we get these all at once to reduce shipping and handling costs to all.

You should be aware that they only accept payment by bank transfer , and the minimum postal charge is 18 Euros .

You cannot order from the shop and the spares department at the same time , which is a pity because the shop takes cards .

They will not change this , even if it means the loss of a sale----in my case 390 Euros for an LGB item (carriage) plus 40 Euros for spares .

Train-Li does bulk orders for all their customers and get parts/shipments about every 2 months (6-8 weeks).

This keeps shipping costs down for all and they do all the paperwork.

Any instructions on removing old and installing new rod on my LGB mogul?

Get a good set of nut drivers. Then its just a matter of removing the bolts (keeping track of what one goes where) and removing the rod and replacing it.

THe screws are simple and there is a tool kit with the correct nut driver available.

Important to have all the washers in the correct place in order to prevent binding.

Also what is the reason for the side rod failure?? Sometines it is a quartering issue and the front and rear wheels need to be properly aligned

I second the need to check the moguls quartering before installing the side rods, unless its the rod from the piston to the middle driver that snapped from improperly picking up the locomotive. You can look at the rod mounting holes or the counterweights that are cast into the driver spoke area to judge the quartering of the drivers. And if all else fails, give Ross a call over at Zionsville Train Depot, he developed a pretty good stash of parts before LGB tumbled from grace a few years ago. He might just have what you need or have other sources to get one from. Mike
