LGB on eBay

Just wanted to say that LGB prices on eBay are up considerably over a month ago, is this due to the Christmas season, or are model train prices just going up across the board. It also looks like all G scale products are higher in price, it it just a sign of the times, or is it here to stay.

Trainman,

At Bill Barnwell’s suggestion, I’ve started some passive tracking of e-Bay prices in pursuit of a few “needs.” I suspect it is seasonal based upon overpriced common things a $200+ STAINZ and a $280 shattered MOGUL that would point towards someone that radically overvalues what they have. I also noted a moderate bump in prices and availability of limited edition and older items, again suggesting an effort to capitalize on the season.

On the other hand, more common rolling stock and most common locos seem to have held fast at their usual price…too high!

Time will tell!

Examples, I purchased a LGB 22560 Santa Fe diesel two months ago for $445.00 new in the box, yesterday one sold on eBay for $695.00 new in the box. Last month I purchased a LGB 2056 Rio Grande diesel for $515.00 new in the box, one sold last week for $595.00. As I like to redue my stuff to my own road name and do modifications to the bodies, etc., but finding it hard to redue engines in that price range, it does devalue them and is only for my liking and probably not others. I did purchase a LGB 2055 White Pass for $350.00 used and for that price I had no problem reduing it, so I’m looking for another one at this time in that price range, but guess what, they are now in the $400.00 to $500.00 price range, what gives here. I need cheaper engines and rolling stock to redue, I hope prices drop somewhat in the future, but not on what I own.

Seeing that I’m going to be putting a bunch of nice lgb stuff on eBay, thats good news for me.

Ted,

I have also observed very little of the stuff seems to move, with the same rolling stock appearing at about 70% of the price of new for months on end.

That’s probably true, the only stuff that I want seems to sell at higher prices then I want to pay. In most cases I send the seller and email and offer less, I find if it’s a reasonable offer many times they will take it, or make a counter offer. Another way to get it for less is to put the item in your “Watchlist”, may times the seller will send you an email and offer to sell it for less. Other times if it’s in my Watchlist and it doesn’t sell, I will send the seller and email and offer less when the ad auction closes. It’s playing the game of buying and selling.

I do miss the shows and bargains I have found, but OTOH I have saved a few $$ by not going to shows.

It sounds like a good time for ‘not for profit’ Railways, to easily sell MNIB/NOS (usually for less than retail) when the speculators are out 'n bout with “crazy asking” prices .

If you pay too much for anything is it your fault, or the sellers.

It seems to happen a lot more with LGB stuff on a facebook sell page there is several collections for sale, so the collectors in one case its an estate of all never been out of the box that has everything for a very stiff price. Never understood collecting stuff just to have it in a box, but that’s me. The Aristo dash 9 deal is probably driving some of that, since the price of one has jumped way way up in the last couple of years, and with Bachmann announcing they are going to make more and the “MSRP” showing up at around $650-700, most everyone with one has them going for $1200.00. Its getting the collectors out of the woodwork , thinking its time to get their retirement money.

I know what you mean Eric. I’m going to be selling what I have so if I even put a starting price, it will be low enough to get the bidding started. I agree that many try to sell stuff for either full or close to retail pricing on eBay and also FB Marketplace. The pricing I have on my list was pretty close to what things we’re selling for on eBay at the time, and not what people were asking. Some items were probably high and others were definitely low. What I have is going to go regardless. Not looking to rip anyone off but not giving it away either. Something that works for everyone is what we’re all after I think.
