I recently purchased a used LGB 2-6-0. There is a switch (3 positions) in the cab. What does position control? How do I activate and deactivate the smoke generator? How much smoke is actually produced?

Andy,
generally the positions are as follows -

  1. Off

2)Lights and smoke

3)Motor, lights and smoke

However, on some MTZ models the positions seem irrelevent when run on analogue. The amount of smoke produced is unknown as I never use it.

Andy,
Do not use lamp oil or any heavy smoke fluid. You will burn out the element.
Do not fill it to the top, either. It will never smoke until the oil evaporates down.
I use LGB smoke fluid only on my last track powered Mogul I have left.
All the rest are Batt/RC and I don’t worry about smoke.

Some Moguls smoke very well, others have just a wisp.

Smoke oil? Smoke Fluid? Different brands? Lamp Fluid?
Good topics.
I tested them. Wrote up testing two years ago.
Results are for anyone’s use or non-use:

  1. Yes, as John indicated, don’t fill LGB smoke units (5 volt versions tested) to top - stay 1/4" down.
  2. Lamp fluid works fine - “Lamp oil” I don’t know about it. Lamp fluid sold at Lowe’s, Target, or WalMart for wick-operated lighting lamps is fine – and cheaper.
  3. You can CAREFULLY use a “Q-Tip” to clean around the element if the smoke activitiy drops off. The “Q-tip” may need to have some of the cotten removed and reshaped by your fingers. Don’t bend the upright element. I found leaving smoke fluid in the smoker will eventually soften the material that seals the upright element and wiring to the case – dump it back into the container when done.

NOTE:
As to the LGB product, still available from some mailorder houses, has many speculative product identifications. One I heard was it is either a clear brake fluid or transmission fluid.

For certain, LGB didn’t manufacturer its own product. Someone did.

The smoke fluid used by LGB was SR24. It was originally sold by Herkat in Nürnberg, but more recently by Hans Weiss. Chem. Erzeugnisse. D - 72657 Altenriet / Eßl.
SR24 celebrated a 25th anniversary several years ago. I did a quick search and found one source in Germany.

Thanks for the insight.
The one liter bottle - my guess - costs $25.00+/- U.S.
Now, was the product actually chemically created by this German company or was it bottled from another application?
I know, likely too much inquiry!

If you go to the Silvergate website you can order LGB smoke fluid on thier Shopatron site. Shopatron is a service that directs your order to a retailer and they fulfill the order.
