Does the LGB Mogul need to be connected to the tender in order to run?
Tim,
Nope.
However, you will have more pickups if the tender is plugged in.
Set just the loco itself down on the tracks and test it for yourself. You’ll see that it runs a little smoother when you plug it in.

I am guessing that it has only been running off the tender power for probably since I purchased it. I am guessing that the lighting in the firebox only works from the power to the loco which is why I have never seen it prior to this evening after removing the bottom and fiddling with the contacts 3 times.

Timmy ,
I can empathise with your problem . Your Mogul , it has to be said , should have instructions on how to run it , I am not being silly . what may be old hat to some is mysterious to others . The argument would be " Who would run the thing without a tender anyway " . The answer to that is plenty of people if they want to check the thing out correctly . The lack of info is taking the "if it ain’t broke , don’t mend it " mantra too far .
Yesterday , I bought a $175 model bus , a collector item . The one in the show case was beautiful . The shop owner said "here’s an unopened box " .I got it home , opened it , and was perplexed to find that the advertised lighting did not work . OK , I am not going to play with it , nor should I , it’s there to admire and reminisce over .
However , I then realise that a set of seats is missing , and there is a huge thumbprint in the paint whose basic finish makes an orange look smooth . Did I get the Friday afternoon one ? Dunno , but it is going back , at a cost of $20 to me for petrol --that’s what 4 US gallons costs over here .
The bus , 1/24 scale touring coach ,on which I spent many a happy hour as a kid (goats run in the family ) and even happier hours on ex-UK ones being used as busses in the old colonies ,is a delightful model . I may even get a photo of it for your delectation . 1/24 scale , a classic for conversion to a rail bus .
Mike
ps Timmy , I hope you get it fixed OK , and your problem didn’t take the edge off the enjoyment . Have fun with it !!
My mogul was running only from tender power and I found the problem.
The engine powr pickups from the wheels and sliders feed a rod that runs inside the gear case on the bottom of the engine. This rod had a dirty connection where the power pickup was sent up thrpough the block.
To fix this problem, I added conductive paste to the rod where it touches other metal.
Been running fine since I did this.

Yeah, it looks like one of the thin plates underneath had shifted. The mogul indeed runs much smoother now that it is getting juice from the loco as well. I need to check my other 5 moguls now just to make sure

What I am curious about however, would the loco only getting juice from the tender have caused both the smoke and the firebox light to not work?
