LGB Mogul question

I posted this question a few days ago but it was within another question and I don’t think people saw it.
I have a sick LGB Mogul that needs a minor repair. I think a wire has pulled loose in the mini plug that goes from the engine to the tender. How do I get that mini plug apart?

I have a similar problem with an LGB Starter Set Steam Locomotive. We have an electronics parts supplier here in town. What I intend to do is see if he can supply the male and female plugs. If you can get the same configuration from a supplier near you,you can just replace the side that’s faulty. These plugs are two piece. They’re designed to only be assembled once.If you look the plugs over you’ll see where the halfs couple. You have to “KIND OF” mangle the pieces to get them to seperate. The design is pretty poor,as they are intended to pierce the wire at the same time they are going together,so if you don’t get a good connection the first time…Well? That sounds like what happened to your repair guy.I got mine to work for a little while after I pulled things apart, but, that’s why I suggest you see if you have a local parts guy that can get you the plugs or a configuration that will work.I’ll save you some grief,Radio Shack won’t have it.

Why not just replace the plugs with a plug you can disconnect and reconnect?
Ralph

I would but I think the receptacle on the tender is permanent. I’ll take a look. Thanks

I have fixed and made the LGB style plugs.

They do come apart and can be reassembled, you just have to be very careful.

To take the plug apart, I first take a digital picture of the plug to make sure I do it correctly.

Then I use an e-xacto knife and gently pry the side apart a little and then I place a thin screwdriver blade in to separate the pieces, then I do the same to the other side.

Once separated, the pins may come out on the cable. I look carefully at the pins to place them back exactly how they come apart.

I not remove the cable and trim off the end, then I reinsert the cable in the connector and by using small water pump pliers, I squeeze the connector together.

I have done this many times over the past 40 years on these types of connectors.

I replace them with a more “user friendly” plug.
Same with those awful Bachmann plugs.

Replacement makes sense. I have done so on three LGB moguls.
How?
Go to a hobby store that features model planes/boats – Hobby People is a store near us.
Take the loco or tender – show the connector and ask for a more durable one. One brand is “Deans” connectors. They work great. They are used for radio control transmitters and battery connectors.
There are others. I have used a micro RCA female/male plug setup. Female set into the base of the tender.
