LGB Massoth : Weird question from a battery & RC guy.

How close is the “Massoth” signal to DCC? If I made something to decode DCC signals, would it work in a Massoth layout? I’m asking 'cause a friend is a collector and won’t touch anything that didn’t come from LGB. I haven’t pointed out that anything I do for him wouldn’t come from LGB

Are you thinking about adding battery power and radio control to an LGB locomotive?

If the locomotive is battery powered using the LGB circuitry, the chuff will work. A revolution receiver can trigger the whistle and bell. There is a small circuit board for them that can be triggered with two accessory harness wires.

No, he wants to control the lighting in his coaches from the massoth remote.

There are function decoders on the market that can do that.

And for around $30.

Biggest issue is current ratings of decoders, LGB had many 5 volt lights and the current can add up fast. Switching to leds helps a lot, as does rewiring the 5 volt bulbs in series to reduce the current.
