LGB Departure honr/whistle technique

Hi everyone,

I got myself one of those LGB 25552 White Pass diesels with the sound system installed.
And I love how it sounds it’s horn as it departs, depending on which direction.

I realise that you need to wait a certain amount of time if you wish to replay the sound again. (I only run on DC Analog control)
Does anyone know the technique?

I tried counting for a number of seconds, but I can’t seem to get it right.

What type of power are you using and what are the settings?

Some units output pulses and this can charge the LGB gold caps at full voltage thus confusing the sound processor. My 25552 diagrams only shows one large capacitor and this can also be charges to full voltage by pulses (PWC/PWM) This may be a factor in trying to understand what is going on.

I’m using the 5amp Analog LGB controller.

The loco came with the 65011 Sound Unit Power Storage so the stationary sounds continue to run while the loco is stationary for roughtly 15 to 30 seconds.

I also checked the manual, but it doesn’t say anything about how long you need to wait before the departure sound plays again.

The LGB controller would eliminate the pulsed power question I had, so the power storage unit can be why the direction change is not seen. Even though the sound is off, the sound processor can still be active and you would have to wait longer for the starting sounds to be activated.

And when first run, the storage caps take some time to fully charge, so when the engine is run for several minutes at more than 10 volts these are at full capacity.

If you just turned the engine on at a moderate speed, the caps are only partially charged so the direction changes are seen quicker is my guess and this may be why you see differences in the time for the sounds to activate.
