LGB Amtrak cars

Today received the first couple of the six Amtrak cars ordered. A review, several years ago, while praising the cars, was critical as they did not match the height of existing USA Trains coach rolling stock. I chose phase IV version simply because it was the cheaper option. The differences between the phase IV and the phase V are minimal (logo and a red stripe) and did not justify the additional expense. LGB’s own catalogue photo has a phase III coach intermixed with five other later version cars in a prototype photograph.

Still awaiting the phase IV Genesis to arrive. First impression is that these are definately long and very well made. I was not prepared for the blue tinted windows (tinted no doubt for the airconditioning efficiency on the prototype). I can see the entry doors (while very novel) being a bugbear during operation. A sharp pointed implement is needed to close the doors (not finger friendly). Overall impression is a definate ‘WOW’ factor. My rake will be six cars plus the diesel. Later on will fit a Phoenix sound unit.

The eBay seller (Chris Ford in Florida - lgbdude09) has been extremely helpful (and patient) in organising for me to purchase these items, plus other LGB standard gauge freight rolling stock. I thoroughly recommend him and have purchased from him for many years.

I never knew Amtrak ran down under.

Brian,
these cars are so long that if you connected them end to end, plus the diesel, then six cars could easily span the Pacific Ocean. You would be suprised hown many U.S. railroad parent companies own the major Australian railroads. They were privatised years ago and the Americans moved in and bought them lock, stock and barrel.

Blue tint? The prototypes have black/gray to slight brown tinting.

Tim,
Remove the coupler and cut them just behind the round piece sticking up on the bolster. This will bring the car end wall(not diaphram) spacing from 2 3/4" down to 1 1/2" then drill a new hole to mount. They look much better that way and can still negotiate tight turns (saying 8’ diameter min) very simple to do.

David,
I have been contemplating reducing the distance between the cars. I have commenced populating the cars. Unfortunately, the cafe car seating is smaller (more cramped) than the coaches and occupants require major surgery. Passengers are only visible when the car is internally illuminated, due the opaqueness of the window tint. Overall impression is a definate thumbs up for looks and quality. I now have the six cars for my train (phase IV).

Tim, I thought about interiors but it’s pointless as the windows are too dark and honestly I see these cars run in my area quite frequently and the windows are dark never seeing the occupants anyway. Personally I think if these cars had clear windows showing the occupants it would take away from the “sleek factor”. Definitely shorten the couples as it makes a huge difference in appearance. Here is a shot taken this past fall when we had a few of our LSC members here for a run.

The above shot excites me as I forgot about this…The rolling stock in this photo is all just out of the box stuff! Amazing what a camera can do.

Digging this back up as I have been working on these cars up a bit

Well, are they done yet?..

Totally useless without updated pics

Dave, I know this is an OLD topic, but your picture there inspired a couple questions:

  1. Can you duplicate this shot with the new cab-control car?

  2. Have you experimented with running the train in reverse, aka push-pull?

  3. If you had problems running in push-mode, what are the options for installing a power brick under teh rear of the cab car? I know you couldn’t pull the entire train, but it could provide enough slack to allow the train to run in reverse, which would be prototypical with that type of car wouldn’t it?

Yeap!

Yes I can duplicate that shot with the cab car …as for running it in reverse I haven’t tried it yet but it did cross my mind about weight. Putting a powered brick in that car is not an option but I may have to add weight to it. I will find out as soon as little league season is over…
