A well known west-coast train store owner has paid $208.05 for a phase 3 Amtrak Materials Handling 50-footer boxcar on eBay. Only 12 months ago these could be picked up on closeout for a song. It never ceases to amaze me the way some LGB items become collectables and others cannot even be given away. About two years ago, I hesitated buying a Daylight Mikado and a rake of eight S.P. coaches. In hindsight, they would have been a gilt-edged investment. The coaches were selling for $182 each and a Mikado plus two coaches could be had for $1100.
And they buy this stuff knowing no parts are available. I guess they are putting it on a shelf.
Hmmmm…I should dust off all my Swiss RhB electrics and passenger cars…
I wonder what my red control car is worth?
The price of that control car is almost upsurd. I purchased my Arosa Express Bt for $200 from a midwest dealer that still had one back in 2004. I went to order the regular ABt for my other trains, and my local shop wanted over $500 for that control car! And this was 3 years ago, before the shenanigan’s started.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been working alot of O/T lately (matter of fact I’m about to head out for my 2nd shift today…) , my stable still desire’s the Ge 4/4II #615 “Klosters” and that red steurwagen…
Chris,
I bought my red control car from Germany, a year or two before any were available in the US.
It was still around $300.00 US and that was years ago.
My greatest deal on my “Glacier Express” was back in '99, I was driving thru the “seedy” section of Portland, Or., and spotted an LGB red box in a hock shop window. Turned out to be the Restaurant Car. Got it for under $50.00.
