LGB 43880 RhB E 6603 woodsided Gondola

Hi all, One of the items that has been “in transit”! This type was later converted to the steel sided gons Fb 85xx (LGB 40880). On unpacking I noticed a package of extra parts, closer inspection showed that the endsills installed in the factory are the standard gauge type with two buffers each and one air hose. (???) Also noted the doors don’t open, there is no interior detailing of the gon walls i.e. the walls are as smooth as they come - very unique for a wood gon with boards. The problem which pre-exists from the 40880 (after all it is the same chassis) namely the extended tang of the coupler on the platform side deflecting too much, has not been corrected. The car is “Made in China” and has the wheelsets to prove it. Not a very good mould and plenty of wobble. At the platform end there is a builders plate which reads “Hauptwerkstätte Landquart 1964”, interestingly it also has the RhB logo on there which never showed up 'til the mid to late 70s. And I have yet to see that type of plate on one of the old E cars. The platform steps are the modern ones after the Fb conversion, the E-type was a very simple wood step affair. The tie down rings for tarps and other covers are very nicely done! All in all … hmmmmmmmmmm most of it can be corrected, but wouldn’t it be nice if they would get their act together! A more detailed Review complete with a comparison chart of the dimensions will be coming up!

LGB with crummy wheels? Wow, I thought they were all those perfectly machined, shiny ones.

Yes Greg, that’s what they are.  Entirely my mistake.

However since they’re the plastic kind, I don’t worry, just get some decent replacements.

Did you replace with LGB or other?

Regards, Greg

They aren’t replaced yet!

One of my buddies has a CNC production shop and I think we’ll be running a batch of wheels on one of his turning centers. Hasn’t been decided, yet, but if one replaces wheels, going with something better is a good idea.
