Folks,
I am newbie to this group.
I have LGB engine with inoperative motor. Any ideas on how to proceed ?
Tom,
the 2010 is an older model. Replacement motors are available, but prices these days have skyrocketed. Expect to pay around $65.00 USD for a motor. New old stock motors with replacement thrust load ball bearings are still available, however, new stock replacement motors have thrust bearings inbuilt in the motor. If using a later motor, then do not fit the thrust ball bearings to the drive block or motor damage is likely.
Motor replacement is relatively easy, although drive block will need to be removed and disassembled. When reassembling, ensure the drive wheels are quartered correctly (drive rods should be loose throughout the full rotational movement of the drive block). If not, then adjustment required. Check condition of the four carbon brush power pickups and replace if required.
Prior to motor replacement, remove the drive block and apply power to the end terminals (either end of the upper surface of the drive block) and check if the motor operates. Occasionally, power continuity is lost at this interface. The tabs may need bending upward slightly to attain power contact when the block is fitted to the loco body.
