Lewis and Clark Air Rifle

What a great history lesson. Note the point of perception.

Thought I e-mailed you that awhile back? Nice too see it finally made it to Ric...:)

I got it from John Bible, thought it was worth sharing. But THANKS Rooster.

 Interesting story…despite popular belief, my own air rifle wouldnt put a BB thru 1/2" styrofoam, let alone 1/2" pine board, or an eye

1500 pumps for a full load and and 800 PSI. Maybe this one is different from yours Vic. Anybody ever try to go from 35 psi to 36 psi in a car tire with the weight of the car on it?

Hot or cold? ;)

With the some one coming at you, getting those 1500 pumps in, might be a bit of an exercise. However, there would probably be a rush that would help you get that thing reloaded.

Well, let’s see. A 1500 pump full charge shoots 40 rounds before there is a discernible reduction in muzzle velocity.

At the time, well trained infantry could shoot 3 rounds a minute, elite forces perhaps 4 rounds a minute. At the rate of 3 rounds a minute, that is nearly 14 minutes of sustained fire, before muzzle velocity is reduced. Note that the video did not say that the “powder” was expended, just reduced.

Not knowing how many such rifles Lewis and Clark had, the locals were unwilling to risk an attack. Even with just one such rifle (note that it is a rifle, not a musket), 40 well aimed shots would reduce the ardor of any attacking party.

This is an amazing design for a weapon. Can you imagine a sniper rifle that does not betray its’ position by releasing the magic smoke?

Steve, your last comment is the reason why Napoleon ordered that any and all Austrian troops caught in possession of such a weapon were to be hanged out of hand.

WoW! I didn’t realize these rifles were that prevalent. It may explain why they never really caught on as a military weapon. That and the 1500 pumps. Sort of reminds us of the (absurd) time when war was a gentleman’s game.

Wow,
This is very cool. $26,000 and you can buy a reproduction.
I’m surprised no one has manufactured a modern version for those countries that allow Air Rifles but not firearms.
Ralph

Wonder if you’d have to have a FOID card for that?

Wow.

I expect you’d have it pumped up before the battle. With that magazine and loader, it could fire mighty fast.

I’d never heard that.
