Large Scale Central

Lenz power input limit

The Lenz central station, LZV100 has an 18volt AC maximum input and the LV102 power booster has a 19volt AC maximum input. I believe that an 18 volt AC input equates to around 24 volt DC to rails minus approximately 2 volts for internal differences. Lenz is particular that to maximise current carrying capability and minimise overheat shutdown (keeping temperature at minimum), the input power should match the output power.

With this in mind, should the 18 volt AC input be taken as the absolute maximum power to the central station? I have a 20 volt AC power supply at 6 amps, or a 18 volt AC input at maximum 1.6 amp.

I’d be careful exceeding the maximum ratings.

One thing, I’m sure these are not regulated AC supplies. So what are the unloaded voltages on these supplies… overvoltage can knock out electronics pretty easily.

(Most AC supplies are rated under load, for example your 20 volt supply could be rated at 10% below 20 volts at full load, but under a light load it could exceed 20 volts).

(This is the reason I feed my DCC system with a regulated DC supply)

Greg,
many thanks. 20 volt power supply tests out at 20.1 volts AC, unloaded.

Generally the best source for this information is the official company web site manuals. I went to the english site on Lenz.com and looked at the english section of the manual for the LZV100. It states the limits as 19 volts AC and 27 volts pure DC.

Based on this I would not recommend use of your transformer.

I use Aristo switched DC power supplies for my railroad and set them to 23 volts for Large Scale use. Works fine.

Stan,
many thanks for the information.

I would place a small load on the transformer and measure the output.

An indicator light (24 volt bulb) would be a good thing to use as it would create a small load and be useful in showing the unit is on. Do not use an led, 20ma is too low for a load. If you can not find a 24 volt bulb, then use 2 12 volt outdoor light bulbs in series.
