I didn’t know that Lego trains were as popular as they are. I thought I might get one of the Lego kits, or off brand Lego type kits on Amazon and give it a go. Why I would do this, I have no idea why, but some of them look like they would be fun to do. This gets me thinking that a Lego G Scale engine, cars, etc. might be fun to build just to have something to do. Just get an engine block, or two, raid my grandkids Lego stock and start to build. I see many with Lego trains are making parts on their 3D printer, just adding more to the builds. Good, or Bad idea.
judging by the size of the figures, LEGO should be more in direction of O-Scale.
Great idea!
There was an article in Garden Railways about converting the lego wheelsets to use on 45 mm track. Lego, or “L” scale is ~38mm.
It was in 2018, I think. I remember the article detailing the hardware needed, it seems like it wasn’t too complicated. I can try to look for the article tonight if you’d like.
There was a young man (like in his early 20’s or less) on LSC years ago that used to build lego trains in g scale. Caleb is the name that comes to mind but I could be wrong.
The Lego layouts can get pretty elaborate, and presumably addictive, so be careful!
I took this shot last year at a local Greenburg show, and was impressed with the details of everything (especially the buildings) and the functionality of the trackwork & trains.
From the Syracuse show. They are very detailed for being Legos. Go to a Lego store and you can buy all kinds of individual blocks. One daughter buys Lego flower kits and they are quite nice.
Hey John have you got bricks?
Have you had a look at Rebrickable? They have heaps of trains to choose from too.
Cliff, Mark,
Don’t you two think it’s about time to grow the hell up ! Lego is pretty “dope” as my boy would call it.
the nearest to 38mm, i heard of, would be what europeans call An 3.5
with a gauge of 37.5mm it represents a Narrow gauge 3’ in 1:29
(so for 60mm figures)
I don’t know about Cliff, but I play with trains and don’t plan on growing up.
I was a grown up, and now I am retired and I don’t wanna grow up
. Besides I am having to much and am afraid growing up would ruin that.
Also I am trying to get my grandsons interested in trains by way of Lego’s which they have TONS as there mother would say.
Thanks for all the info that you have provided, I personally would not be interested in building a total Lego layout in G Scale, but adding some trains to add something different would be an added feature that many would get a kick out of. Many of us have grandkids and they could give us some good pointers on building with Lego’s. It will be interesting to see who gives it a try, I think those who have whimsical layouts might be first to try it.
The Lego kits ain’t cheap, so yeah, leverage that investment!
The key word there is… KITS…
For a $30 investment and a few mods I can make a small Amtrak high speed consist !
I took an LGB block build car and used 2 Lego Santa sled kits. I made an G scale sled from the 2 kits. You can see it on the siding of the passing Christmas train video:
Sorry Wayne;
The message comes back “Private Video Sign in if you’ve been granted access to this video.”
No Joy, David Meashey
Same here. Wayne, you just need to make it “public.”
I thought I did make it public. I don’t have an account. U-tube must have changed. My old desktop can’t hold any more programs.
Thank you Cliff! 17-20
