LBG MOGAL

I have a LBG Mogal and am considering haveing it convered to a proto2 system, not being very much
of a hand at tearing engines apart could any one tell me if there is a fly wheel with in the motor set up?
Is there a exploded diagram any where I could download

Thanks for any help
Ed

No flywheel.
Motor pretty much encased in the block.
What do you need a diagram for?
Also, is this a 3-wire or 4-wire motor block?
Based upon your question, if you are putting in the control system associated with the sound system, and you don’t know how the loco works, you may not find that making it a 4-wire block is within your level of ability.

Ed No fly wheel, drawings you can find at LGB product site here is a link to one generic mogul

Ed, if the Proto 2 can take a reed closure without being bothered by contact bounce then you can get one in a pretty confined space. See a similar installation at

Mr. Curmudgeon I wasn’t planing on doing it myself ,a gentleman by the name of Ray M does this type
of thing. One of his requirements is that the engine have a flywheel or one can be easily installed. As I am paying him for his time it is best not to have him spend his time trying to figure out a hard instalation. It appears
that this is going to be one of those sooooo. May be my Aristo Mike it has 3 fiywheels LOL
Thanks to all

Ed, it is not possible to install a flywheel on LGB Mogul. The motor has worm gears on both ends which power 1st and 3rd axle. Please note that the Buehler motors used on the Mogul are quite large and strong and there is really no need for a flywheel. Best, Zubi

Ed,
I have drawings of pretty much every LGB product.
If you want one, I can attach it to an e-mail.
They are in PDF form.

Zubi It’s not about makeing the engine run better. It’s about counting the number of revs of the motor

Are you familier with MTH DCS? what I am trying to get done is convert the mogal to the DCS system, as I run a lot of MHT
G (1:32 scale)

John thanks Ray was wanting them to help with the rewireing if there were a fly wheel…but

Ed

Which is why I said what I said.
3-wire blocks are a PITA to convert, you will not get a flywheel in it UNLESS you weld on a shaft extension and put a flywheel outside the block.
I knew you were looking for a code wheel for tachometer, which is why I asked what I asked.

Mr C I did understand your frist statement and concur. I was only trying to explain to Mr Z why, as his post led me to think that his understanding was that it as to enhance the running of the motor. Ray has done a Bachmann Annie and I thought it might be great to do a mogal But after talking to you guys and lots of others I have given up on this idea. Ray has also done a Aristo Mike before and I have one of those so that is the direction I shall go.

THANKS for all your help
Ed

Ed, thanks for the note. No I am not familiar with DCS. If the only reason to install the flywheel is to count the # or revs of the motor, Ray should have no problems installing one on the Mogul, especially if he was able to install it on the Annie. Rev counter can be made as small as one wishes, contrary to a flywheel supposed to increase momentum (rotational inertia) of the motor. End shafts and worm gears are long enough on the Buehler motor in the Mogul. Plus the worm gears are made from brass which should facilitate soldering. I would be careful though - you do not want to overheat the motor! Good luck and let us know, Zubi

Zubi Ray turns his own brass flywheels There is a bar code tape that fits around the flywheel and an eye that
reads it. It controls the chuffing and the puffing of the smoke unit so they work together also scale mph and time
run of the motor and lots of other things. I really like it. It’smore like the real thing that any other system Ihave found
Thank you
Ed

Ed, with Curmudgeon and George you have some of the most knowledgable G-scalers anywhere.

I would venture to say that Ray M. has become an expert in this sort of conversion, and if he says that he can do it then he doubtless can. ( Even so, I would humbly opine that LGB motor blocks were known for their compact design, but were not famous for too much flywheel room!)

However, if the cost of the research is daunting to you then the cost of the entire project may not be to your taste either, as one will have to pay for both MTH parts and labor.

cheers

Tom… Ray’s charge is about $ 350 for a known application . For one where he has to work out the details Who
knows? The Mogal, right now I have a little over $500 invested. It has sound on it . I have 49 engines and
about a thrid are MTH with Proto 2 already on them. While the LBG Mogal would be nice, I have a slection of others , some he has already converted for others . I have instructions on converting a Aristo SD-45 &
Aristo RS-3 on my computter at home( wireing gets really complicated for me) This is not cheap ,but I really like the DCS . LOL

Ed, WOW! For that kind of money (500$ plus at least 500$ for the basic Mogul) you can almost have a live steam NCNG Mogul, sound and steam for free!! Best, Zubi

Assuming that you want to have a live steamer to begin with. While I think they’re ‘neat’, they’re not for me.

Bob … I am Not into live steam. I would most likely blow my self up and I burn real easy… lol Zubi…I have $500 which includes sound and engine

Ed

Ed, 500$ cannot buy a decent live steamer. But a great electric loco can be found for this money. To avoid any confusion, I love both. Although due
to time limitations I recently run mainly live steam , I collect, greatly enjoy and recommend electric models of steam locos too! Best wishes, Zubi.
PS blowing up and burning yourself is a part of the great fun!! Try it and you will not regret;-) - next time you visit Tokyo please let me know!
