The owner got this at an estate sale. Of course, I’m expected to know:
-
What is it? (something European)
-
Does it work? (yes)
-
Can it be converted to battery? (of course)
-
What kind of train does it pull?

Tom, I have one I picked up from a collection too. Mind has the number 99 6001 on the front. I believe it is a German tank locomotive reproduction. It commonly pulled passenger cars mostly. It does have sound, but the capacitor needs charging off the track first. They run well. Looks like that one has had some time outside.
LGB 2080
LGB 2080D or 2080S depending if it has smoke(D) or sound(S). Good engine, wish one would get traded in at the local G scale shop as this model takes well to onboard battery power, which I use. Mike
The real prototype still exhists and runs on the HSB in Germany, otherwise knows as the Harz Narrow Gauge Railway. They have some neat webcams you can view on thier website. Thier primary power is 2-10-2T steamers of which LGB has done models of(not cheap!). LGB has also done correct passenger cars and a few freight cars that this model pulls. The little 99 6001-1 is a one off prototype done just before the outbreak of WWII. Ment to be followed by many more like it. But it was not to be and the railway standardized on the 2-10-2T engines instead. Mike
Thanks! Just what I needed to know.
You go Mike!!! That’s how you answer a thread. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Thanks guys, most times I feel like the odd one out thanks to my autism. But I am full of information when it comes to most things trains, model or otherwise. Now if I could just get my Aster live steamer sold so I can get my dream engine, the live steam version of my HO scale Casey Jones ten wheeler. I have more Casey Jones stuff, from books to HO models to pictures of the 382. Been one of my obsessions since I was a little boy. I hope you check out the webcams, espically during the winter in Germany, trains dont stop due to heavy snow. Can be real fun to see the pictures from the cams. Wish they were in real time, last time I checked they only update every so many minutes. Mike
Thanks Mike I learned something !
The sound version of the 2080S did not have capacitors for sound, it has a 9 volt battery and is located in the water jacket right front under a removal plate.
I’ll check that Dan, but in my case I’m not sure, unless the previous owner used a rechargeable battery. I ran the locomotive for several minutes before the sound kicked in. Same thing occurs with my moguls if they haven’t been run for awhile.
That is the factory sound boards starting to fail. The electronics in our trains have a finite life span. The “taking a few min” to warm up is like an old tube type TV doing the same thing. Eventualy the sound will fail completely and a new sound board or repair of the old one will be needed. Train Craft by Claus is one of the few places you can get older LGB sound boards repaired. Its usually cheaper to just install a new Phoenix sound board though. Mike
original stock 2080S did not have a recharge circuit. To activate the bell and whistle on these locos, a treadle was used on the track as the sensors in the engine were mechanical, not reed switches. You can replace these with reed switches and I do this often for customers. Treadles wear out and the metal sensors wear down and no sound is activated.
