latest SD45 used crummy speaker?

Just hooked up my QSI decoder in my Aristo SD45 high hood, the last loco manufactured by Aristo, has the “D cut” wheels.

Anyway, it sounds awful. I thought all the SD45’s used the same speaker as the RS-3, which is a great sounding oval.

The frame is gold colored:

But the speaker in mine has a black frame, a differently shaped magnet, and as I said, sounds awful.

Is there anyone out there who have an SD45 from the very last batch (D cut wheels) and has hooked up sound?

Aristo used the cheapest speakers they could find. Apparently, they found an even cheaper one.

Yeah, it seems so, will compare it to the original type and report back. The original one was on par with that nice oval speaker you could get from phoenix.

Update, had several ovals, and replaced this one with one pretty similar to the Phoenix, but with butyl rubber surround as opposed to foam or paper (original)

Huge difference in bass AND better highs (has a small dome in the center of the speaker). Now you can hear rumble of the prime mover as it accelerates.

Could you post a video , so we can hear the engine’s rumble ?

I really don’t have a recording setup that does low frequencies. Some day I will get something, as I would love to do a comparison of installations where you use high quality speakers, or multiple speakers, and of course in stereo.

All I have is a cell phone, which does all kinds of audio processing and is mono, and a camera that has a stereo mike in it.

In any case, as I tested the speakers in free air, I could also see much more cone excursion on the better speaker, that was linked with the better low frequency sound.

I wound up using a Samsung 4 ohm, 5 watt speaker on the QSI, so far only a single speaker, the fuel tank is dominated by the lead weights.
