Saw a infomercial on early morning TV today about Laser Bond Glue. Had some dental work that used this. It seems to be all the rage in the dental industry and wondered if any one has used it yet, for hobby work. I’m thinking it is like a high quality CA glue.
Saw the “infomercial” again - the company is Laser Bond USA - 800-306 - 0384.
When my Dentist has used this stuff, he and his assistant ( even once they put them on me) always wears glasses when bonding the adhesive in my mouth. They are not showing eye protection in the commercial.
Disclaimer - I do not have a commercial interst or financial connection with this company, nor have I tried it. But I am certainly willing to listen to the review of the sucker/hobbyist that has experimented with this product.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
If it’s the stuff two of our guys use, it will NEVER bond until the UV light shines on it. Thus you can work it 'til it’s exactly as you want it, get your fingers away, and light the light. One guy uses it to glue magnets to his locos to trigger sounds. I’m thinking of borrowing it to repair some broken gears. The stuff stays hard, and an be used to build up broken parts.
It may actually be as good as the info-mercial claims. One of our members saw it at Lowe’s.
I have used a similar glue…however…the UV light only affects the glue it can see. It will be ok if, say, you were bomding two pieces of transparent plastic because it can “see” the glue…but would only bond any glue around the outside of say two pieces of wood NOT that actually between the two pieces of wood.
The one I use is usually used by fly fishers when tying flies…

Good point. I hadn’t thought of that.

Interesting thought. If it the same stuff as used by dentist’s I guess my cap is only glued around the edges ;0
I dunno, can UV pass through tooth enamel?
But wait, order within the next nine minutes and we’ll double your order. Just pay additional exorbitant shipping and handling. Not available in stores anywhere.
I have used a similar adhesive, and had mixed results. But I didn’t give it a real thorough test. it is, indeed, the same type thing the dentist use.
Not all of these glues are equal. You need to know the properties of the glue.
For instance some glues cure at 365nm UV wavelength. More often, those cheap little nail bar lamps and other blacklight lamps operate around 350-360nm wavelength. Meaning they are not exactly the best tool for the job… however, you really need to know at what wavelength the glue is designed to cure.
A reputable dealer usually will sell the small UV lamp that is compatible with the UV type glue he sells.
Beware EBAY Chinese !
As I mentioned earlier Fly fishing types use it so a talk with the local Rod and Line retailer may be useful.
