Large Scale Fantasy Locomotive

You know you have one “in your mind” so what is it?

I have a few ideas and thoughts myself but interested in what others want for a loco?

Free lance or actual prototype, steam or diesel, scale matters not and all are welcome hoping this thread will produce some interesting suggestions.

I bought a B’mann chassis with this style in mind. I’ll stretch it for a 4 wheel leading truck …

One more on my list…

One? Just one?

More like a couple dozen.

Electric, battery, steam, diesel, gasoline, air, several of each.

EDIT: Okay time to try something, uploading a photo to Freight Shed and inserting it here.

Is a 1980s or 1990s freelance trolley locomotive creation which was going to be made in HO on Athearn SW-7 mechanism with F-unit shells contributing the nose shapes.

Would be cool in G.

Freelance streamline trolley locomotive

Or how about an A-B-B-A set of these, of same vintage and theme as idea above but using the SW-7 cabs to set body shape and dimensions.
Would be a pretty beefy beast in G with 16 axles powered.

Part 2.

And then there’s the stuff in here,

And then there are several 1800s locos in UK

And then there are these On30 creations of mine on Bachmann’s HO 6-wheel Plymouth WDT which they labeled MDT.

They could be fun scaled up to one of the G scales.

And I think that building it to 1/16 or 1/18 scale figures would make the 45mm gauge 1 track scale out to pretty much 30 inches …

(so, where does one get a pair of 6-wheel 45mm gauge power trucks of suitable wheelbase which would be affordable on poverty level Social Security Disability?)

I’d love to have one of these. Anybody know how much they went for when they were still available? I wouldn’t even have it mailed to me - I’d go pick it up in person.

Edit: Just realized this engine was offered in live steam. I would want one electric powered.

I have the hull and frame of the battery powered LGB 2075 I got in 1976. that I have always wanted to repower it for sentimental reasons, but that is cost prohibitive. I’ve a tentative plan to “tram it up” a bit to hide the lack of side rods, pistons, etc., do some interior details, open the back, and marry it to a powered tender to make a fantasy articulated unit. I had a lead on a shattered BACHMANN Big Hauler I planned to strip for parts, but the guy wanted “new, functioning locomotive” prices for a bag of parts. That’s the local market…

The project is on hold - probably indefinitely - but I thought it would be good first crack at “kit bashing,” part making, painting, given the old fellow doesn’t run at all, it is not like I can make it worse! Wouldn’t hurt my understanding of steam engines to take on the project, either.

In the meant time, “he” has returned to service under kid power.

I started making an E5 out of an Aristo E8. I cut the sides off and flipped them to get the center doors in the right place, and opening the right way. I plated the thing with polished aluminum sheets, and built up a new nose with Bondo. But the nose didn’t come out right and I lost interest.

And I also want to build an ACE 3000. But at the rate I move, it will probably never happen.

I always thought all of the American style locomotives that LGB made were fantasy locomotives, since none of them were accurate models of anything and Piko seems to be following in their foot steps. Hartland is pretty much in the same boat as is a lot of Bachmann’s early stuff.

A true 1:20.3 scale Sumpter Valley version of the ex Uintah articulated.

I’ll throw my 2 bits in…

The hey I’m rich reckless abandon side of me would want an:

Erie Triplex

This would of course need to be 1:32 and live steam. (thus the MTH version won’t do) But then I’d need to buy a big string of hoppers to go behind it.

The much more practical side of me would like one of the big EBT mikes also in Live steam. (are you listening Accucraft?) This I have cars to go behind and a railroad appropriate to run on.

EBT # 18

Hmmm lets see…

  1. never needs oiling
  2. always runs flawlessly
  3. all the details stay on and do not brake

I could go on…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Never derails

and

Runs by mind control.

I think therefore I am engineer.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I think you guys are on to something. (https://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Or on something.

Or both.

And I think I like that …

Fantasy critters On3 from B’mann HO center cabs… plus a rail tow truck from a toy truck.

First my hit parade!

15 was getting side rods. All the holes are threaded for the studs.

All brass constructions, thanks to K & S

Windshields are hinged … flea diff rear end w/ a NWSL motor …

The wheels on the center cabs could be pulled enough to make gauge. I glued them just in case.

Nice, love the toe truck

Great stuff so far guys!

Forrest …Love the drawings and thoughts (sorta on my level of thought at times)

Maynard…The E unit looks pretty darn good to me from the side angle. Maybe a little more forward slope on the nose?

John…love the critters !

OK …Now this is how I think most of the time! However as most know I prefer diesel’s. Still working on a PA1 loco for the CVRR OCS with updated and bigger everything (motor, fuel tank, air tanks, dynamic braking, etc riding on HT-C trucks).

I would also like to build a SD70 “cowl” unit as a total freelance. Perhaps the F45 should be resurrected x’s 2 making it a SDP90F or F90? Now that would be badass!

No price on the locomotive just calculate shipping from 17055 and PM me if you want to pay it .

very nice

@ Forrest …thoughts …(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

The forward section has now become dynamic braking and the rearward radiator section has yet to add vents and fans? Only a thought !
