i don’t visit the chat here for several reasons. First, if a conversation is going on, I feel like if I post I am interrupting. Also, conversations are usually on-going discussions and I don’t know the background so much of what is said means nothing to me. Second, my typing skills have atrophied to the point I have to spend so long proofreading and correcting that by the time I submit the conversation has moved far past the point at which it is appropriate.
I really enjoyed chat on LSOL, where a group of regulars signed in Tuesday evenings. It was there I became friends with David Maynard, who posts here often, so I know chat rooms can lead to friendships that go beyond this hobby. To get more participation, when a stranger comes in, ask a question or two, like “Do you have any projects now?” or “Do you have an operating layout you can tell us about?” Saying “Jump in” is nice, but often the newbie doesn’t feel like his/her input will be relevant.
