Lack of motor blocks for kitbashes, a short rant.

Vic,

I have spoken a little to the folks at NWSL and if your up to it there is always the option of making your own block with their motor and gear boxes. I am considering this approach for my Micro. They have several idea and option on how to mount stuff in a small space. I even toyed with them on the ability to make a 0-2-2-0 articulated micro just to see if one could and he had some good ideas.

Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks guys, thats a few more options to consider

can I get some cool point for this suggestion? (they are on sale right now 20% with coupon code WAKEUP)

just don’t buy 'em all I might want one (unless they suck!)

There I gave you a cool point because well…thats cool. You could build one seriously small loco on that thing

Darn, I hadn’t thought of one of those. Oh well, I had already purchased an Aristo Mack railbus truck for my Delton Mack railbus (Doozie)

At the same time…you might check your local library. The one out by me has a 3D printer for folks to use that is pretty reasonably priced.

:open_mouth:

I don’t actually know anybody who has SEEN one, and you have one in a library!?

tac, stunned

Your library needs to get with the times, local library now has

6 Makerbot Rep2’s (about 3k each)

2 Mojo 3d Printer ( about 6k each)

Laser cutter

CNC machine

Yay!

Tony at ultimatetrains.com has lots of aristocraft motor blocks
And he will ship anywhere.

Does anyone know the basic dimensions for these? Wheelbase and wheel diameter? J.

I’ve bought HLW blocks via Phil in the last year without any issue I was aware of. I’ll give him a ring on Tuesday to check it out. J.

So I rang Phil and he was there.

He still sells Hartland parts including the motor blocks and has one or two of most things in hand. If you want more than that you’ll have to wait while they are ordered up from the factory, but they are available.

The only thing that has changed is that the ‘big’ 4-4-0 block (ex Kalamazoo, 3 inch wheelbase that could take any of the three sizes of spoked wheels) is discontinued in its original form because some parts have become obsolete. It’s been replaced by a new block that’s the same externally and fits just the same but has different guts - it’s a drop-in replacement.

The ‘small’ mack block (also 3inch wheelbase, disc wheels) is definitely available, $30 a pop. So is the interurban block (2.5inch wheelbase, smaller disc wheels), at $50 I think.

[edited because I originally posted from a phone and it stripped out all the paragraph breaks for some reason]

Thanks Jonathan. I’ll check the HLW railbus this week and see which motor needs replaced and give him a call. I also need to check on a couple other parts. That’s good news.

Thanks Jonathan. Folks at HLW whom I’ve written or spoken to over the years come across as good folks. Now, if only I had a stash of cash with which to stimulate Hartland’s economy … I’ve got lots of ideas, lots … and would really like a Paul Bunyan Dunkirk logging loco, maybe if I saved up from my Social Security for the rest of the year …

Really, since the demise of other sources of motor blocks, Heartland should get the word out. They might make a few bucks in the process. I know they used to sell a bag of assorted parts with a motor block on their Insiders page, but that page quit working quite a while ago.

No Problem at all. I’ve always gone to Phil for HLW bits, he’s always helpful and since he designed most of it, his knowledge of what will fit what is absolutely encyclopediac. Just remember to ring on Tuesday and Thursday mornings unless you want to talk to the answering machine.

As an aside on the logging loco, I think there’s a version of the mack block with spoked wheels and coupling rods - IIRC it costs about double what the plain version does. If you were prepared to do your own upper works, a couple of those might make good trucks for a scratch built logger. And if you’re scratch building anyway it’d be a whole heap easier to rescale the loco to F or 7/8n2 or whatever if you need to.

J.

Yea Phil is a great guy to talk to on the phone. I called years ago and ordered a motor block for my Kalamazoo 4-4-0 kit-bash. When I told him I needed a motor block, he asked me what I burned up. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)I need to call him for some other bits and bobs, I found a Heartland caboose in my garage that is missing the markers.

And I can think of a few electric loco and motorcoach inspired builds which they might be usable for.
Which then connects with one of my biggest problems with model railroading … I think of things …

Scratch that. I spoke to Phil again today and the mack-block-with-extra-cheese has spoked wheels but no rods so it wouldn’t really work out for a scratch built logger. You need the big 4-4-0 block there, but fitted with the smaller wheels. J.

post did not work in entirety so i deleted !

This may be a blatant commercial for Hartland, but their motor blocks are just super for bashing and running…

You can call Phil Jensen at their parts department on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm CDT…

If you get a recording, leave a message and Phil will get back to you…
