Krylon Ultra flat black--gone

I was very fond of Krylon’s “Ultra flat black.” It gave a great matte finish very easily. Well you can’t buy it anymore–I tried everywhere locally, even online. They will list it as “ultra flat black”, but what arrives, alas, if “flat” black. I wrote to Krylon and they confirmed that ultra flat blck is no longer made

I need to find someone with a stash…

That sucks. I liked it too. It was one of my standard stocked colors.

My wal mart has a whole boat load of the stuff, I better stock up.

I may have to make a run to Wal-Mart, just to find some. I painted a project today using the new “flat” black, and it was terrible–spattered like crazy. So I switched t my last half-can of ultra-flat,and it went on like a dream and looks great

Mike,

Do you heat your paint in warm water before spraying? Hot water from the tap, sit spray paint can in pan for about 5 minutes. Dry off can really good and then spray. I feel I really notice a difference in the flow of the paint.

Ric, I did that–set it in a pan of warm water for a few minutes. Usually it works really well, but the Krlyon flat black–this is the “new” formulation, comes in a can with a sort of bullet-shaped plastic lid–just spattered all over the place. It smells very different from the ultra-flat black as well

I’ve got a gig tonight way down south of here, and on my way I’ll pass two Wal marts–i’ll be checking for the old cans

Mike,

If you can’t find what you want give Bondo Black Primer a try.

Richard, thanks–I’ll try that.

I had a musical gig way down south of here, and passed two WalMarts on the way–neither had ultra-flat black, but they did have “Fusion Camouflage ultra flat black.” So I’ll try that and see if it’s similar

Mike,

Please let me know how the Fusion works for you. I tried some when it first came out (not the black) and didn’t like it at all as it didn’t adhere well over primer or old paint. It’s made for raw plastic and does seem okay for that.

Just use the Stove and BBQ Black…it don’t get no flatter…

And it will withstand the heat of the boiler… :stuck_out_tongue:

I just tried the fusion camouflage “ultra flat” and it’s ok, better than the flat black, but it didn’t stick well to a bachmann annie headlight–tended to run off until I put a good bit of paint on it. Tried it on a piece of the pilot, which included brass bits, and it worked better It’s noticeably different in color than the old Ultra flat, but it’s not a huge difference. It’s slower to dry

Thanks for the report Mike. Sounds like the same problem I had with Fusion. Took too many coats to properly cover and then didn't stick well.

This time of year there has been a pretty good selection of camoflauge paints at the NAPA Auto Parts. There is a dull or flat black, plus a number of colors that are great for weathering and grimying (is that word?) up.
