Kadee enters large scale wheel market

https://www.zaccworks.com/kadeecouplers/GScaleWheels.html

I was quite surprised to get an email today announcing g scale wheels by Kadee!

In light of the struggles in our hobby this is good news to see new products on the market.

Well, There goes the wheel prices - -

Does anyone else think $56.00 is a bit much for new wheels for ONE car?

I’m just glad Bachmann hasn’t been bitten by the Sheckelgruber bug.

Bill

Says $13.95 for a set of 2, I am assuming that means 2 axles, IOWs one package is replacement wheels for one truck. So $27.90 for a typical car, that’s not too terrible, especially if they are smaller sized for 1/29.

I like the look of the wheels, but what exactly is “one set”? Is it one axle, 2 axles, or 4 axles?

I am glad I have 2 cases of Bachmann wheels, since my purchases have slowed way down, they should last me a long time.

What is a set? They should just define the amount of axles to avoid confusion. That would be way too logical though.

Andrew

This is a good case for a manufactures (Kadee ) forum posting… Someone from Kadee could just post a/the answer.

The very first link for the discount place says 1 x set of two.

I still don’t know,

set of two wheels on one axle ?

or is it a set of two axles (4 wheels ) ?

Bill

I went to the Kadee website for the answer

Picture shows - - -are you ready ?

one axle, with a set of two wheels = 13.95

unless you want black then it is 15.95 per axle

check it out for yourself

at the Kadee website.

Bill

Bill,

I think you got it wrong. Here is what it says…

Wheelset Features
• Non-magnetic Metal wheels
• Smooth tracking Free rolling Contoured Insulated Axles”

Notice it says axles (plural).

The picture shows one wheelset, I can believe their definition of wheel set is a set of wheels on one axle. The fact that the word axles is plural is could be just sloppiness… my take is it could be either way…

But I went to RLD Hobbies:

http://rldhobbies.com/1-scale.aspx

4 axles, list 31.90, his price 23.89 … it explicitly says you get 4 axles for this.

So, it’s not as bad as it sounds, and I have a pair of them, from over a year ago (beta tester), they are beautiful…

Greg

p.s. that discount site is owned by Jon Dekeles of LSOL “fame” if anyone cares… I won’t buy from him.

Well, since I am sort of interested, I sent Sam the answer man at KaDee an email for clarification. So, maybe tomorrow, I/we will have an answer straight from KaDee as to what a set is. Or at least what it means to them.

Ok, while I was typing my response, Yunz guys came up with the answer. thanks.

Greg, I don’t think RLD hobbies is affiliated with LSOL in any way. I have purchased from them at the ECLSTS and I didn’t see Jon anywhere in site. Jon does run a discount KaDee site, I think its Kadeecouplers.com

After looking at Robby’s and Mike’s sites, why do you have any doubt? You would be buying from them, not Kadee. The prices and description of what you get for your money are right there.

Yes Greg. I have no doubt now. But I was posting before they posted. Out here in the boonies, the suburbs of Pittsburgh, my posts don’t get posted as fast as those of Yunz that live in more industrialized areas.

So, next question, what is Gary Raymond going to do, increase production to be competitive, or just throw in the towel?

If that is the case, Kadee are not easily defining the more positive value they are offering the customer.

From the looks of the Kadee wheels the profile doesn’t look any different than say the USAT metal profile. I was under the impression that Gary Raymond produced more scale appearance (read small flange height) wheels… If that is true that I don’t see much of a competition.

From Greg’s Website about Gary Raymond wheel flange sizes. http://www.elmassian.com/trains/wheels-aamp-trucks

"I make 3 basic “Degrees of Fineness” (NMRA term) wheelsets. We have 60 models total at present which fall into these three basic categories.

1).G & 1:29 Semiscale which will work in all worst case situations with really bad 332 track, as reliably as other deeper flange wheelsets in most cases.

2). F, 1:29 and #1 Finescale which are smaller flanges and will work on all 148 to 332 if the trackwork is reasonably well done

3). PROTO (Exact) in #1. Will work extremely reliably on all 125 to 250 rail, but require .059" flangeways (typical Semiscale flangeways used in most 197 to 332 trackwork are in the range of .118")."

Per Gary: “The flange heights vary based on scale also but basically, PROTO in 1:32 is .031”-.033, 1:20.32 .049"-.054", SS .062"-.068" and the deepest .090" approximately"

The link in the first post is what Greg was referencing. That is JDK’s site - and I wouldn’t buy from him either.
