Kadee 830 on a USA SD70mac?

Has anyone tried to body mount a 830 to the tail end of usa’s sd70mac?

I don’t think you have enough room.

Here’s a picture from Ted Doskaris’ article on the SD70 (more on my site), showing one of the really short Kadee gearboxes. Pretty sure 830 won’t fit.

789’s worked the best for me on this loco.

These are nice loco’s by the way.

I was working on adapting the loco to fit straight shank KDs. As another person suggested, the ones with the large offset, tend to drop cars when the track is not smooth as it happened to me. I also still wanted the ability to have the coupler box swing for longer cars on smaller radius. I had purchased several different KDs and was looking at the overall best choice. I even have an Aristo on the tail of one with the swinging mount. I like the slack take out on the larger boxed ones.

I ended up putting MTH’s remote couplers on because I figured I’d rather have the ability to drop cars where I want to. I’m really happy overall with these engine’s performance and looks. I bet you could modify them to run whatever coupler you choose. You have to figure out what look you’ll be happy with vs. performance issues. I don’t know what you’re up against with curve radius and car length.

I will run it with a 836 for now.

I do think this will be the week spot when running a long train!

Thanks for all the idea’s.
