Progress looks good, Matt…
Thanks Andy!
I got some time yesterday to do some work on the layout. I’m out of rebar and almost out of cement board. I’m going to need to make a trip to lowes soon. I’m also out of gravel…again. lol.
Cut all the rebar I had left, staked in the ground and started attaching the cement board.

Filled with gravel. It looks low in the middle, but it’s not in person.
That’s all I was able to get done before we headed out for the evening. Fingers crossed I will get some time this coming weekend to work on it again. For now, back to working on the house.
Your RR is really coming along Matt. It is kinda like magic how we can get worn out from doing things like putting in a fence or laundry room then get a boost of energy to work on the RR. It must be the fun factor.
Is your cement board real water proof board? I once had the idea to use hardibacker board like you have on the backside to hold dirt up and in a year and half it had become so brittle from the dampness it had to be replaced. I found out the hard way Hardibacker though used as a backer to bathroom and kitchen tiles is water resistant not water proof. I do still use it as a roofing material on my buildings.
Keep up the good work.
Todd, I thought it was. On durocks website it says it is. It says it is waterproof, not water resistant.

I plan on double up on the boards when I build the fence to protect my privacy fence. I’m hoping it’s waterproof!
THANKS!
Looking good Matt ! The cement board will be buried and once the dirt has settled it will be just fine. Mine has been buried since 2004. I see lots of room for future expansion .

Thanks Mike! That’s what I thought you had told me. I’m going to double up on it like you did too.
Yeah, I have a LOT of room. Maybe in a couple years expand out down the fence. I hate the thought of buying more of those retaining wall blocks though. lol.
Progress looks good, Matt…
Not much of an update. I forgot to even post anything after last weekend. I’m out of supplies, so I hope fingers crossed, I can get to lowes this weekend. Seems like I’ve had a million other things going on. It doesn’t help that I’m back to work now too. booooo. lol.
Anyway, this is the last of the gravel I have. I’m going to have to call and get another couple tons in.

After I ran out of gravel I still had some free time before we had to leave for the evening. So, I brought out the new purchases to just see what it was going to look like.
It’s amazing how small something so big can look froma distance. I’m not even on the patio when I took this picture either.
Yep, that’s starting to look like a railroad!
You may think things are going slow but in truth you are just whizzing along! To do what you’ve done thus far with all the other projects added in and the weather on top of it would take me years. heehee!
Very nice work too.
Lookin good!
Thanks Jon! Slowly but surely. I hope to be doing scenery next year.
Thanks for the reasurring words Richard. I just feel like I haven’t gotten as far as I’d wanted to. Of course, I redid the block retaining walls like…4 times. lol. So, that didn’t help.
Thanks Robby! If the weather and life cooperates I hope to have all the track done in a few weeks.
Matt, you are doing fine. This isn’t a race to the finish, its a journey to be enjoyed. Are you having fun yet?
Thanks David. I’m having a blast. I just want more time to work on it. In the spring it rained constantley. The month I was off I got some good progress done, but now that I’m back to work all the time it’s hard to get to it. It’s also wicked hot and raining off and on again. It’s like spring all over. lol. Anyway, I’m having a blast and learning a lot as well.
Your railroad is coming along real nice Matt . I can relate to your weather woes too . Its been eather raining or too hot to go outside for very long . Usually by this time of the year I have about 2/3rds of my trees pruned and my roadbed leveled. Not this year however , I still have around two hundred trees to prune and groundcovers to trim . The tracks haven’t been re-ballasted this year eather . That hasn’t stopped me from running trains however. You’ll get there. Take your time and enjoy the project .
Wow you made a lot of progress from early spring. Everything is looking good. Looks like a new yard now.
Very good progress!
Keep at it!
Thanks Mike. I appreciate it! I am enjoying it.
Shawn, I guess if you put it like that I have made some progress. Since I technically broke ground in April, maybe it’s not too slow of progress.
Here’s the first
Vs. Now
Thank Sean!! I have a 3 day weekend this weekend. My son has a football game Saturday and I have some work to do after that. But it looks like sunday will be a trip to lowes and I’ll work on the house and the railroad! Maybe I can finalize all the roadbed this weekend.
Thanks again for all the kind words everybody!
Hey Matt as long as you’re having fun thats all that counts. Besides our railroads are never really finished they just keep evolving.
Chuck
Thanks Chuck!
Sorry for the lack of updates. I’ve just been too busy to work on the railroad. This past Saturday I did get some time. I figured I would get the inside walls done and the roadbed. Well, my ocd kicked in instead. I got one wall built and then noticed I didn’t leave enough room for foreground scenery. Ugh.
This should be a nice rolling hill. I forgot to take a picture of the frame work.
That’s when I really noticed the lack of room for scenery. So, down came the wall.
There. That should be enough room now.

And that’s when the wall behind me wasn’t far enough out. Down it came.
I think this is better. I should have enough room now.

After all that, I figured I would try and see what the siding and yard would look like over here instead of the back fence. Why…I dunno. I should have just left it alone. lol.
Just thought this was a cool pic

And this is how it sits now. Waiting on me to put it back the way it was. I really need somebody standing near me to smack me upside the head when I come up with dumb ideas. lol. (don’t tell my wife that)
Oh well. It was a beautiful weekend and I got to spend it outside on the railroad. Even if I didn’t really make any forward progress. lol.
