Large Scale Central

Just the begining

I finally got some time this past weekend to do some more work. After I had finally found some more stones, it was time to put them in place for the section where people will be walking into the layout. Only problem, I miss measured by about 1/4 of a block. So, there was a gap. DOH! I had to take down the wall where my farm is going to be. It’s the section just to the right of the bridge. Oh well. lol.

I thought I had taken more pictures, but can’s seem to find them. Here is the finished inside section.

I started on the outside section, when it started to rain.

The next day I did manage to get it finished.

Fingers crossed, I can get some more railroad time!

Nice progress, Matt…

Looks great Matt. Are you considering low voltage lighting to light your buildings and street lites and such. Seems like your at that point where it will be easier to plan and mark and bury your wire . I just thought I would add some more stuff to your list .(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Thanks Andy. Although, I’m about a year behind where I thought I should be at this point. I also said I wouldn’t buy any trains until it was done either, so there’s that. lol. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Thanks Mike. It’s funny you asked that. I really had no intentions on lighting any buildings… until last week, or whenever it was I made the last train vid, because I really haven’t spent any time at night out there. But when I was running that train and had a fire going I got to thinking even if I wasn’t running a train, it would look cool having everything lit up. The plan is to head to lowes early Saturday morning for railroad supplies. I’ll price some low voltage wire and I’ll need some buriable romex too, if I do it. I know, I know…it will be easier to do it now than later. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Matt, when I started my railroad, 13 years ago, I was on a 5 year plan. I figure, if I get back on plan, IF, then in about 7 to 10 years, the 5 year plan will be done. So that puts me, 20 some years behind schedule on my 5 year plan…

Cousin Matt

If it wasn’t for Andy’s wife he would still have a 10’ diameter circle in his grass.

When we started the Bluestone Southern G-scale railroad. I told Jane I was on a 10-year plan… We started in 2005…

I did take about a 2-year sabbatical, due to illness, so I still have 2 years left to go… ( and yes, it took that long to recover, somewhat)…

Jane’s been trying since 2005 to make it a 2-year project… hehehe

Trying to rush, usually just creates more problems… Forget time frames, and just enjoy what you are doing…

I have forgotten the time frame, or else I would be further along.

Thanks guys! Good to know. I feel a little better about my progress now. lol. I’m not sure why I thought I would be farther along. I had no clue how much work it was going to be anyway. lol.

Work? Naw, this aint work.

True David. It’s too much fun to be work. I actually look forward to it. haha.

Found a few spare moments last weekend to do some work. Opted to work on the layout instead of mow.

Hauled in several more pickup loads of dirt.

This is when I noticed I didn’t like having the rear wall three blocks high. I looks good from a distance, but just didn’t look good on the back of the layout. It was also going to cause some issues when I expand. This section is just a temporary horseshoe.

So, down came the top section of the wall. Played around with some placements of some of the blocks.

This is what I ended up going with. A short interior wall going into the layout. That will allow of some higher back fill behind the yard barn, while keeping the rest lower.

I don’t care for the blocks on the left in this pic. I’ll do something different there.

I also started getting some structures. I have several piko buildings now, but opted for a colorado models mine kit to be my grain elevator. I gotta say, this thing is a PITA to put together. I forgot how much I don’t like kits like this.

Weather is looking good and work has slowed down. So, I look forward to making some more progress!!

Its been 12 days since your last post . Hows it progressing ? Is it done yet ?(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

LoL Mike. Oh, I wish. I’m still hauling dirt in. I have to shovel it in the back of my truck, drive home, then shovel it out. I underestimated how long that would take. lol. I really, REALLY, want to get all that done this year…before the weather turns bad. We’ll see.

A little more work was accomplished this past weekend. I hauled in more dirt. I also had to lower the track over where the grade crossing will be. Originally I wanted it higher, but now I see that won’t work. So, I had to dig out some gravel and cut the roadbed supports down some. I’m ready for ballast now.

I still need to call split jaw and get an estimate on what their road crossings will run me on my 20’ diameter curves.

Also, in my spare time I got the grain elevator assembled. I finally found the right shade of paint for the roof.

I also got a couple of the purina logo’s painted on. I still have more to do to it, but I thought I’d post a few pics. At least it’s a little proof that I’m getting a few things accomplished. lol. I also have picked up about 5 other structures so far! yay!

Here’s where it will be sitting. Or there about’s, once the site for it is prepped.

Nice work on the railroad Matt , looks great . I like your grain elevator. Did you build it from scratch ?

Looking good, Matt… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks Mike. That is the bronner mine kit from Colorado Models. I still have a few things I’m going to do to it. But it’s pretty close to what most grain elevators around here looked like back in the 80’s and 90’s.

Thanks Andy!!

I actually got some free time the other day, so I hauled in some more dirt. I’m so close to being done with the back fill!!! Also, last weekend I build a short fence to go around the wood pile and my trash dumpster. I got tired of looking at them and the fence does a decent job of hiding them. I still plan on building a gate for it.

Just a small section towards the front of the yard barn still needs some dirt.

Lot’s left to do still, but glad I’m almost done hauling dirt in!!!

looking Great

I understand that.
