Fantastic work Richard. I really like the guy in the middle. Cool vibe. Great emotion. Nice.

So what is your tool chain with these? Are these pics of the final casts? Man they look good.

I have access to a uPrint, I’m just getting going, any suggestions?

Do you make a base mesh and bone them or just sculpt them in those poses?

Martan,

Let me know how you like uPrint. I’ve been using the service Shapeways with some really good results. The pics above are prints of the kits that I painted. I order 2 prints and use the best prints for making the molds. I clean up the worse ones and paint them. So the castings will more than likely be even better.

I do use a base mesh like an armature. I then sculpt a base likeness and if the figure is known for dressing one specific way, I sculpt clothing on the base in a T pose and then pose the base and sculpt cloth deformations and refine the likeness and expression after I save the final pose.
I usually start with the head and do the likeness as a separate piece.

Here is a link to a video capture of sculpt I am doing for December.

I like the uPrints but I have no experience with anything else. I’m working at 1:29 scale too which means not much volume to pay for too so it’s fairly cheap to experiment.

I enjoyed your videos, however I’m not the artist you are. Outstanding work. I’m using makehuman for the base mesh, then paring the groups down in the obj with a text editor. I take that and import it into hexagon to add details and props. Some of the props and parts I smooth and detail in sculptris.

I have a figure done and I’m attempting to rig him in DAZ but have not tried the copy, I’ve been doing it by hand. Quite a learning curve!

Anyhow, just for testing, I dressed, posed and exported a standard DAZ figure, here is a pic of the final print, he’s my third try and the best so far:

What was the cost?

$10. He is 5’ 11" in 1:29 scale. Basic genesis dude from DAZ.

I’m working on a construction crew with props.

If I can get the rigging in DAZ to be happy that is…

I’m surprised they were able to print it. DAZ meshes are hollow I thought. BTW, is that ABS? If so Shapeways is probably cheaper… Also how is the detail?

ABS at .010 so detail is ok at 1:29 but not stellar. His hat brim is at the limit of the printer resolution. He would have to be smoothed to cast him, you can see the ridges but they are thin. He is about 0.43 cuin.

Martan,

I print in Frosted Ultra Detailed material. It is acrylic. .01 mm detail level with wall thinness at .2mm. No lines of resolution on the models if the print is oriented correctly, which so far mine have been.

Pre order sale is over and all the orders are shipped. I’ll try to get some images of the castings up.
