where did you get those pics, that show me?
Your build has a lot of character and style, Jim, but, really, I think you are enjoying yourself too much !
Awesome Jim seriously this is a cool build
I really like the whole concept. I may need to steal it in the near future and hang a shanty on one of my cliffs.
Well I love Dennis’ buildings too and I think you are doing him proud
I think I’m almost completely done with the shacks except to install windows and doors which won’t take long. This morning was tank time:
I took Devon’s excellent suggestion and added a fill and overflow pipe to add a bit of extra visual zing.
Here are a few close shots and different angles (looks like I need to touch up the black paint on the pipes):
One thing I was careful about was to add the piping in such a way as I could still remove the roof and the shack for future improvements, like internal lighting.
Next up: installation and approach stairs.
Water tank and piping look great. What are the bands on the water tank made of?
Dan:
The bands are .02" thick by .08" wide styrene strips.
One last thing needed to happen before I start putting the platform out on the rocks and build the supports/stairs: there was a part of the deck that needed a railing.
I was tired of doing wooden railings so I thought I’d try yet another new thing: a rope handrail.
I’m skeptical that the “rope” is going to last. We’ll see. This is cordage for bead jewelery.
I also added just a bit more weathering around the water tank and on the roof nearby.
Happy Miking!
Jim that is really excellent work. Are those individual boards and battens on the shed? I am looking forward to seeing it on the rocks with the stairs installed.
Thanks, Colin. Yes, all individual boards and individual battens. My pin nail finger has been cramping up. Glad I bought the 10,000 count 3/8" pins
I like the rope idea. it is simple, it works and it is prototypical. If you didn’t have rope, chain would work too.
You sure beat up the wood. it looks great.
This morning was setting the deck on the rocks. A bit of finagling involved…
In progress:
And a few pix of the finished installation:
Last thing to be done: 2 sets of steps.
Damn Jim. That will be a show/conversation piece for sure. That is truly cool.
Done! These steps required a lot of finagling.
I made a bit of a platform to make it possible to get to yet another cliffhanger in my future:
A few more pics just for completion:
While it is an honor to be able to compete in the Mik competition, and it is good to have a deadline to get things done, I think I’m happy this just happens once a year :-). More stress than a hobby should have, imho. And I don’t even care (at all) if I win. It has just been fun participating.
Cheers!
Jim,
That is amazing. It is a very life like model. I really like the stairs, they came out perfect. The stacks of firewood also make it believable. Very nice work. As soon as I have some rocks installed on my layout I will have to make some cliff hangers as well.
Very Very cool
Very nice work Jim! I think you captured the look perfectly and are a great addition to your layout. If I ever get back up your way I would love to see it in person. Congrats on a job well done!
Steve
Steve (and all others): You are welcome to swing by whenever you are in the SF Bay Area, with the caveat that my layout is still very much under construction…
WOW that came out great !
