Large Scale Central

Jan's Barn

Jan Golding took a Barn from Michael’s Woodworking and put it on a Jigstone base. She molded the doors out of resin and added them over the old opening of the door, that was originally too small for our scale equipment. The loft door and other doors and windows were created the same way. All the wood was painted with outdoor latex paint of a color she thought represented barn red and a silver galvanized roof. Note the seagull on the roof ridge and the results of their being there running down the roof. The seagulls and the mule came from John Schneider of “Just Plain Folks”

She got a second place ribbon up against a great looking bridge. Nothing against the bridge, but I feel her barn is fist class. Very proud to have it on the railroad and very proud that she did it. She does great work, but has been a little intimidated by the competition at the Show. Her first entry was a jigstone farm house that she modeled after the old farm house on the EBT. Since then she has built a stone church and many other structures for our railroad. With each structure, she improves her skills and techniques. Yes, I’m a lucky guy.

That looks great, but it looks even better in person.

Where will it go on your layout? I didn’t take any pictures at the show, so I guess we’ll have to wait for the Fall to try again.

Well done, Jan.

Very nice Jan !! Boy, Ric you are lucky to have a model building wife !!! dave

Bravo Jan! I agree with Bruce, it looked even better in person. I’m glad she brought it along.

Excellent work! Congrats to Jan too.

Jon.

Nice work! I missed that at the show–bravo1

That looks great. I like the little rabbit hutch on the side.

Very nice!

That’s rather nice , isn’t it ? Quite restrained weathering—it makes all the difference .

Well done Mrs Golding .

It is a beautiful barn… I has it sold, numerous times, however, Jan just didn’t agree with the price… I guess, now she’s just stuck with it…

Ric,
You are a lucky guy.
I am going to show this to my wife and try to guilt her into helping me
Ralph

Ralph,

I do none of the building, except the ones that can be just bought and painted, nor the plants. I do the heavy construction, as directed, dig the holes and some minor consulting work when asked and work on the track work and rolling stock. We each have our own hobby bench and only steal tools from each other occasionally. My interest in Largescale Trains has been fueled by Jan’s interest in the plants, layouts and the associations with other people in the hobby. Trust me, she is the driving force of the KV Railway.

Very creative!

I was admiring it at the show but could not figured out what it was being bashed from. Who or what is Micheal’s Woodworking (google provided many results)?

Very nice work! My compliments to Mrs. Golding.

Michael’s Custom Woodworking

I was told at the show that the barn was Jan’s, but nobody said a thing about her winning a ribbon. So I guess we’re even if I forgot to mention I was going to Spencer Shops…

Good work Jan!! Congratulations!!

Michael lives in Kansas and brought a van load of buildings and wood to the ECLSTS. I think he went home with almost an empty van.

His stuff is so beautiful, I can’t imagine him ever taking anything back home.

Was he the guy close to Nicholas Smith? I saw a guy there with buildings and a rack of milled dimensional lumber? I didn't stop as I mill my own but I walked back at the end of the day and didn't notice it so perhaps he did well! Ken pointed out her barn on a walk about with him. I love the pigeon's on the roof....I swear I have a freakin fetish with birds but you must have it as well.........chickens and pigeons on the roof of your fantastic models  Your both excellent hobbiest as your "Timesaver" was the only layout that I saw a kid run. No I don't mean Andy either! ;)
