Walking in the yard today (a brisk 15 degrees F) I noticed that the prototypical Diesel exhaust smell is no longer part of my railroad’s ambiance.
You see, after nursing a 50 year old oil-burner for 15 years, I finally bought a new furnace with a high efficiency burner. Can’t smell the darn thing at all. That, and the exhaust roars like a jet engine. I guess I’ll have to put in an air strip.
I miss the smell, but I won’t miss the big oil bills. So I guess I can accept the loss of one of my favorite parts of winter railroading in the yard.
